Too much for the term. IMO, this isn’t a good contract for the team, depth wins cups, not 3 guys making 42% of the team budget. Bad move. If it was 6+ years, I’d say it’s fair cuz the cap’ll go up.
Wow that seemingly came out of nowhere, 250k cheaper than expected and solid term. Leafs haters will say this is a bad contract but it’s really not, he’s worth every penny as one of the best players in the world. Excited he’s going to be a leaf for the next 5 years (including the last year of his current contract)
People will say no, but this a great deal for both sides tbh, Matthews gets a good pay bump and can pretty much cash out a massive deal after this contract is up, Leafs will be able to afford that big cash in when the cap goes up a decent amount in 5 years. People saying no are just haters on my king.
Leafs did really well here, We knew he was gonna get medium term as has been reproted for the past year and half by Friedman, and he was gonna get more the Macks AAV,
13.25 is a pretty good number with the cap going up substantially over the next few years.
Think people are overeacting, that just me tho
Too add to this I think we're in for 2 more offseasons of record setting contracts with Drai and McDavid, and this contract doesn't even start till next year.

People just say no bc it’s the Leafs. I’m happy with it
I voted yes. This is what a negotiation looks like. TOR obviously wanted more term, but they really didn't have a lot of leverage. Now they can go to Nylander and get him extended "reasonably". Good job Treliving!

Just bc he’s extended doesn’t mean the core 4 will be together guarenteed making that much. Matthews is a superstar and I’m fine with the price and term since he’s staying

He got less than he wanted AAV wise but only 4 years so I think it’s fair for both sides
Next year, Toronto has ~$35 million locked up in three players. They 12 players signed for next season with ~$33 million left to sign the rest of the team, and that's with the cap going up by $4 million. They will be in cap hell for next season at which point they will lose half the team.
