Why I disagree that Yzerman overspent on UFAs

Created by: Hat_Trick_Swayze
Team: 2025-26 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 13, 2023
Published: Jul. 13, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
- This is the current team built from within in '25-'26 with no further UFA signings or trades.

- Some extensions are adjusted a year as they would have started in '24-'25.

- Seems we all agree Seider will get 8 years, Raymond gets a bridge, and Yzerman doesn't give real term to anyone else.

- I re-signed Sprong, Kostin, and Husso to similar deals though they probably get more with the cap going up. With this set up Danielson, Kasper, Mazur, Edvinsson, Wallinder, Johansson and Cossa need raises in '26-'27, but some of these ELCs will undoubtedly slide to stagger cap. I also think Lombardi's play will force them to make a move.

- Chiarot, Holl, and Walman all come off the books in '26. I could see a Chiarot buyout or trade/dump and also a Walman trade before. That leaves almost 34 mil in cap in '26-'27 with 12 players signed.

- 55 million in '27-'28 with 7 signed. If worst comes to worst, this is where you buyout Compher's last season.

- To me this is the realistic timeline to build a perennial contender again. Yzerman was 32? when he first won and Larkin starts this season ('25-'26) at 29. I'm patient. Cook, Steve. I'd rather wait and not be selling off pieces 6, 7? years into the playoff streak with one series win or somethin' craaaaazy like that. That **** would SUCK.

Gotta fill out the roster might as well do it with useful players. No way Seider is getting that money. You're pretty high on Danielson if you think he's your second line center in a couple seasons.

I can absolutely see him getting 9.5 and yeah I've been high on Danielson for a while. I'm very hopeful but I get Kopitar vibes.

yeah but there are more useful, holl isnt as bad as hes been made out to be but 3.4 is still a big overpay, and seider will get a fox/mcavoy/makar contract so this isnt far off it at all

I think Seider will get 7.5 max unless he turns into a 50-60 point consistent dman. I actually liked the Holl signing. Watched a lot of Leaf games he's not that bad

I think there's already a contract and will be announced before the season. It will say a lot when Yzerman is only willing to give 6 plus years to Larkin or Seider

7.5 max, huh.
7.5x3 maybe, and then he leaves our ass right away so he can get paid what he's worth.

Remember when Larkin was supposed to get 9? How about Cat getting 9.5? Zero chance. Seider will sign 7.5/7

8.7 is so far off from 9.
DeBrincat sure, whatever.
You're not gonna be able to lock this guy up for 8 years @ 7.5M.
Everyone knows the cap is gonna rise lol. Yzerma should not risk putting a #1 D-Man at 22 on a bridge.

Not at $7.5m he won't. Most teams- at least the smart ones- sign max deals with their franchise RFAs to lock them into a quality cap hit for their prime. Yzerman tries doing a mid-level deal (DeBrincat) on Seider and you'll be stuck either losing him in UFA or paying a massive price difference. Players and their agents aren't ignorant.

7.5M gets you a bridge contract Seider lol. Even if he's not worth 9M, you take the bet that he will be in a few years and get him for 8.

Holl, Chiarot, Copp…a few guys are a bit overpaid, but the roster has little dead weight overall and not overextended on term. Their cap situation appears good to me.

Anyone who was concerned about these contracts is just looking at them in a vaccum and doesn't understand how roster management actually works. They have all of the same played out arguments whenever some non-superstar is signed to a contract a bit out of their respective price range.

As you said, these contracts will either fall off or be a non-issue when the time to contend arrives (if it ever arrives).

Stevie gets a B+/A- from me this offseason, and it's only July.
