As I said, not sure what the Blues plan is this offseason but if they'd like to improve and need cap space to do it this is an option. Keep in mind that Toronto's 2nd round pick will be late (it was 60th this year), and at that range only ~25% of drafted players even become NHL players... let alone getting Norlinder in return who himself was literally a 64th overall pick, pretty much the most common player you're gonna get at that point in the draft. When yoy really analyze it, I think it's wild that this deal wouldn't interest you especially if it allows you add a better player through free agency.
I have Scandella and Murray both in Laval, so they aren't getting in anyone's way. I didn't move Armia (he's in Laval), you could be right about Hoffman we will see.
If you want to let the kids play then taking on Cap dumps is the only useful thing MTL could do with their surplus of cap space this season, your logic seems contradictory - would you rather they just sit on the cap space instead of leveraging it into draft picks?
Edit: Other than Myers I suppose, but he could also be waived if we feel that way who cares. We know there will be injuries, there always are.
The cap hit is marginal is the issue. Scandella isn’t terrible. I personally really dislike his game but that’s mainly due to for some reason him being very active in the offensive zone, yet he has virtually no skill in the offensive zone. But in terms of a 3rd pairing guy he’s fine.
I don’t have much in depth looks at Norlinder, but if I had to guess he’s what we have a glut of and that’s left handed defenseman that are fringe/3rd pairing project guys. Not a bad player, we just have a lot of those.
At Scandellas cap hit and with where the rest of our roster is and the direction Armstrong hinted at (roster virtually being set in stone) I’d venture to guess we move out one of our guys in that mould who we wouldn’t have to pay to move. Scandellas cap hit isn’t great but it’s 3.25 for this year. Factor that in to us virtually being at cap once Toropchenko signs and it’s hard to imagine we find a better version of Scandella at his cap hit on a short term deal.
I get that the 2nd is probably going to be pretty late which is fine but given what we could probably afford to chase it’s be a marginal upgrade at the cost of the 2nd and probably a 4th which is what I’d expect Scandella to return at the deadline if we stink with retention.
Our issue is mainly we need a top 4 LD. Only way this would make sense if we were to chase Hanifin. If we did that then maybe this would make a bit more sense, but we have so many guys with trade protection and term it’d be hard to extend Hanifin and the cost of acquisition and dumping Scandella in the process probably isn’t worth it with as many other question marks as we will have
