He was great in the playoffs. Sad Smith had to go, but excited to see Barbashev.

Hard to say… was this worth losing Smith AND a 3rd? I dont know to be honest and I don’t think it was a good choice tbh. Could be wrong though, it’s a short sample size which makes it hard. We will see..

Barbe fit like a glove with Eichel and Marchessault. Sad to see another original Knight gone, but good for Barbashev. #MisfitLineIsNoMore

It's more reasonable than what he'd get on the open market, but still don't think this one ages well. His impacts weren't good despite his production being good.

Barbashev was great for Vegas, I guess this is why they moved Smith for cheap

He earned it but I thought it would be around 4 mil not 5. Also it is good long term deal if he keeps up his play from the playoffs

This is a gamble of a deal. As I know he did well with Eichel but small sample sizes leading to big deals dont normally end well

I honestly thought he was going to get more. He had all the makings of an overpayment in free agency (gritty depth player who did well in the playoffs and maybe 1-2 good seasons, but previously depth). It still may not age well but not as bad as I expected.

Good: 105 points in the last two seasons.
Bad: 89 points the rest of his career combined.

If he can keep up the 50+ points pace, then this is an okay contract. If he slips... oh no.

Overpay IMO.
He earned the money in Vegas' run. But 5x5 is pretty steep. Oh well, I could be wrong.

I think it's good. He earned it strictly from his past playoff performance, but I was expecting him to get more than this tbh.

Well deserved. Very cheap deal if he continues to perform at a 60 point level. (That includes playoffs)

Putting aside that they traded a top prospect to rent Barbashev and only got a 3rd-round pick for Smith, I think you have to look at this as giving up Smith for Barbashev, since both have $5M in cap hit. They gave Barbashev more term than Smith had, but he’s younger, so that should be ok. If not, they’ll probably be able to find somebody who’ll take him for future considerations.

This is a classic example of why I always say that when you pick up a player whose contract expires at the end of the season, you shouldn’t try to sign him right away – see how he fits in with your team first. They might have been able to get him to sign for less if they signed him as soon as they got him, but for all they knew then, he could have been a bust. Instead, he turned out to be the perfect left winger for Eichel, so it made sense to sign him and let Smith go. Having a top-line winger making only $5M is great for cap management.
