Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 21, 2022
Published: Dec. 21, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1. Will do a follow-up post that considers how the players will fit into the roster under the salary cap in upcoming years
2. Would try to get double retention on Murphy (Chicago picks up 1.5, Anaheim picks up 1.45)
perhaps via Anaheim or Arizona. Domi should be easier to get a double retain on.

Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Domi, Max ($1,500,000 retained)
  2. Murphy, Connor ($2,200,000 retained)
  3. 2023 7th round pick (CHI)
Additional Details:
Max Domi can score, provides grit, and his advanced stats in the playoffs last year suggest that he wasn't a liability, although he seemingly played sheltered offensive minutes (10 min overall). He could play on our third line, and occasionally jump up with JT and Marner if that works out.

Murphy's name isn't on the trading block although the Blackhawks seem open to trading anybody who won't compromise their future, and will help them add to it. Murphy doesn't have great playoff experience but he is a steady, stay at home defender and should play a steady, stay at home type game. I'm hoping our d core can replicate Pittsburgh's from 2016-2017. I just want them to get the job done and get the puck up to the forwards.
CHI
  1. Král, Filip
  2. Voit, Ty
  3. 2023 3rd round pick (OTT)
  4. 2024 2nd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
I don't know what Chicago is looking for prospect-wise, nor the market for the players coming our way. It may take a first and a higher end prospect like Niemela.
2.
TOR
  1. Anderson, Josh ($2,750,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Again, I think that double retention (i.e 1.2 mill by Montreal, 2 mill by Anaheim/San Jose/Arizona) only caveat would be that I'm not sure if these teams would be open to retaining for a 5 year contract. For Montreal, they're not ready to compete right now, and Anderson can help them get assets for when they're ready to compete. I think power forwards that play his style tend to run out of steam quicker (relative to other players), so it would seem that the Habs should use him as leverage for assets when they're ready to contend. They might like having him around to protect their younger players though - I'm not sure.
3.
TOR
MTL
  1. Benn, Jordie
  2. Engvall, Pierre
  3. Kerfoot, Alexander
Additional Details:
These players would go out to make the cap work, in some form.

I don't think there are very many teams that want to lock up a retention slot for 5 years, that will come at a premium due to duration alone.

Honestly with "reports" that Hughes has turned down large offers, and the overall consensus that Anderson is an oversized paperweight, I just can't see him being moved for another 2-3 seasons unless it's something we can't say no to.

I just can't see him moving anywhere at this point, the sell point and buy point are just too far apart.

Makes sense, if nobodies offering too much for him, then it makes more sense for Anderson to stick around and play out his contract anyways until his value increases, or he helps the team in some way

My thought exactly, not like we're in any sort of a rush right now anyway

The trade with the Hawks is really bad for Chicago. No way Hawks touch this deal. Murphy w/ retention for 4 seasons costs more than Toronto would be willing to pay.

Like I said above, I confused him with Roni Hirvonen. I am well aware of his brain tumour and how he has little trade value at the moment since there is so much uncertainty about his future.
