The way the NHL is now players must compete on who will take less money to win based on the last 10 years of Stanley cup winners. Adding a soft cap like the NBA would sway teams to pay their players the money they deserve rather than the pay cut competition league we are in now.

They need to change the cap someway. It heavily favours American teams with the taxes

Why would the NBA be the league to emulate? Its the league where small groups of players conspire together to make championship teams. Its probably the worst league to follow the example of.

You are forgetting that the salary cap limit is based on league revenue, given that the players have to pay escrow. If the league went to a soft cap small market teams would fall under the system unless there is a luxury tax like MLB.
If you look at the NBA they get 500% the viewership than the NHL. The soft cap system makes it more able for the NBA to work

The league has no say on state/province tax laws. If they made special rules for the Canadian teams it would be biased and regulations are made to be applied systemically.

NBA probably have similar ticket prices and similar revenues to majority of there teams or at least smaller discrepancies. Teams would be moving without cap or possibly even folding if it gets too out of hand in discrepancies. Nhl is doing well, but I think a large part is homegrown talent staying in the same cities, but still a walk up ticket in Florida is a whole lot different than a arm and a leg in Toronto. Would be nice to get everyone on a similiar footing with a big time tv deal, and everybody profitable at mid cap and possibly at max cap, then possibly make some changes to the rules. I still think veteran minimum contracts shouldn’t count against the cap.

The NBA cap is like 110 million dollars for like 12 guys. They don't care about the cap because everyone gets paid.

Right, so instead of there being a bunch of teams that can legitimately compete for a cup, there would be a few wealthy teams that could buy cups, and about 28 teams would be left knowing they didn’t stand a chance each year. Got it.

Oh, came from a toronto fan. Not surprising.

Its a double edged sword

It will help teams afford more of their players

But also ....

Rich teams will thrive while teams who dont generate a lot of revenue will have issues trying to compete

The closest we’d ever get to a non hard cap is if we decided to create a tax adjusted cap ( would result in different values for everything but in the end, all league min players would make the exact same amount of money, etc )

No, but the league could set a system where players sign based on dollar value they take home after taxes, meaning that regardless of where a player plays he makes the same amount of money, therefore eliminating the advantage that teams like Tampa Bay have over teams in California or Canada or other high tax cities/states
