Specifically for the part in BOLD...I don't think this is 100% accurate. Yes on the Cap Dumps, but that's just to make the cap work. The Hawks need to get picks and not really even prospects. They need to start FRESH. Teams like TOR/WAS/BOS/LVKetc... are in win now mode. The truth is, there isn't one single player better to trade for than a 3x Cup winner and Hart winner like Kane. Not Hertl by the size of the grand canyon. Not one year has Hertl ever been above a PPG player AND he's going to give you 1 year left. Kane had 65 points in 55 games just last year and true Hart consideration for much of the year.
WAS should keep Kuzy. Truly. Send Kempy and Hags. The Cap hits are ironically equal to Kane's 50% retained. Just send (3) 1sts. YES, that sounds like a lot, but pick #27, 28, 29 30, +...doesn't hardly ever pan out. Seriously, go look. I know your someone that does their homework so please go verify. In the last 10 years...can you cherry pick (3) players pick at Slot #27 -#32 (I'll even give you the extra expansion slots before Vegas/Seattle were teams) that COMBINED you'd rather have that Patty Kane for the next (2) cup runs? Brady Skjei, Tanner Pearson, Rickard Rakall...If you could cherry pick all three of those guys...you'd STILL want Kane on the Washington Capitals for the next two years feeding Ovi snipes all game long. Tell me you wouldn't. Those guys are just redundant on the caps. Kane provides elite talent to WAS.
Kane is awesome at hockey. If there's anyone who might have better chemistry with Ovechkin than Wilson does, Kane is a reasonable guy to try there. If there's anyone who can find the same seam passes across the power play that Backstrom looks for, it is definitely Kane.
I personally may have some doubts about anyone being worth three late 1sts. The last time the Caps finished about that well, for three years in a row, that their picks have developed from, they wound up with Carlson, Marcus Johansson, and Kuznetsov. I kind of think Kuznetsov, at his best, is on a level with Kane, just in terms of each being able to lead their team in scoring through a regular season and through the playoffs, but I'm a Caps fan, so I'm sure I'm biased. I guess I can see where three championships is more than one, but some of it also probably comes down to great teammates and not having to face Pittsburgh in the 1st round every year.
eta: looking at those drafts with 20/20 hindsight, because they had Mike Green at 1RD, the Caps probably take Roman Josi instead of Carlson, and Ryan O'Reilly instead of Johansson. Kuznetsov was the right pick at #27 in 2010, though.
