Upgrade defense (JVR to Islanders)

Created by: pundystar
Team: 2016-17 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 27, 2016
Published: Oct. 27, 2016
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assuming the NYI choose to go the 7F/3D/1G route for the expansion draft they will likely move a D-man by the end of the year. Boychuk has to be protected due to his NMC, then I see them protecting 2 of Leddy/Hamonic/Hickey ... which makes one of them trade bait. JVR gives them a solid wing option for Johnny T and they protect Tavares/Ladd/JVR/Lee/Bailey/Nelson/Strome upfront from Vegas.

Since they are trying to win a cup I don't think they should feel the need to move a d man. My guess is they keep him considering they didn't move him the year he demanded a trade.

that's... actually a decently even trade. you don't see much of that on Armchair GM.

I think something like this is very plausible, and I haven't seen much of Hamonic but if he's v. good than it might be something to pursue

Leafs67 .... if the islanders believe they are true cup contenders this year then they're only fooling themselves. In my opinion it's better they set themselves up for the expansion draft and they are getting back a top 6 fwd now or they wait and teams play hardball with them before the expansion draft knowing they're desperation to move someone or lose them for nothing.

Can the Leafs take back Grabovski, or does his buyout prohibit that? That would be fun!

Leafs bought out Grabo for reason. For another team to give him a monster contract is beyond me. The Grabo signing by the Leafs....that's Burke...along with Komasarik, Lyles, Phanuef, Kessel. The worse thing a GM can do in a cap era is not being able to project values of players (I'm not saying a GM can be right all the time.)

To answer your question....yes my understanding is they need to be at least a calender year since the buyout to come back to the roster. but I doubt we would if we are giving up JVR. If it was for some prospects and/or picks I could see it but the leafs would probably want Kulemin before Garbo due that he is Toxic while with the leafs.

Buke traded for Dion and Kessel, but Nonis is the one that gave each of them the long term & big $ deals.
