FYI, this deal brings him directly to UFA. And well, I wouldn't do this deal, some people would.

I would keep Russel if that is the cost. He is only due 1.5MM in actual money and there are teams that value that type of deal. He is still valuable to the Oilers for 1 more year and trade him mid year when someone has an injury.

There are teams that value that type of deal (like the Senators and their owner), but I don't think the Oilers are one of them. They care more about the cap hit than the actual money

That’s my biggest issue with this. They should’ve signed him 1 year and traded him somewhere where he’s still under team control and can negotiate a long term deal. This reminds me of Mark Stone all over again
