Notes on Detroit for Fans of Other Teams

Description
Just a couple thing I have to say based on things I've been seeing a lot.

First off, Anthony Mantha. Some Mantha trades I've seen are just not there in value while others don't make sense for the Red Wings. A common argument I've seen from fans of other teams is that Mantha has never had over 48 points and is already 25 years old. While this is true, Mantha was having a breakout year and had 38 points in just 43 games this year. That is on pace for 72 points in 82 games. Red Wings fans view Mantha as a 30-goal, 60-70 point guy, so the Wings won't trade him as a 50-point guy. Also, Mantha has not said he's unhappy in Detroit or requested a trade, and Detroit has never said that he's on the trade block so he's not for sale unless someone is willing to overpay.

Second, Cap dumps. Most people seem willing to give somewhat fair compensation for cap dumps. Realistically, the Red Wings will only be willing to take on 1-2 cap dumps this offseason. I'm not aware of many other teams willing to take on cap dumps and due to the flat cap and the supply vs demand, cap dumps will cost a lot this offseason. The Red Wings will basically accept their 1 or 2 best offers. Because of this, I think it will cost a lot more this offseason than previous seasons to dump cap. The offers that we do accept will result in some good pieces coming back for our rebuild. All of that to say that we aren't going to take on cap dumps for less value because we suck and they could play on our team as some people seem to think.

Third, we're not giving up draft picks for veterans just because we suck. The Red Wings are clearly rebuilding and we have worked hard to trade away our good players for futures. It makes no sense for us to turn around and swap those picks for veterans or other NHL players even if the value is fair. I don't see us giving up draft picks unless it's for a player that could realistically be a part of our future.

Our biggest team needs this offseason are a goalie, 1-2 LHD, 1 RHD (If Seider isn't ready), and 1-2 middle 6 forwards (That will play on our 2nd line). Lots of people seem to suggest that Detroit will attract no free agents at all which I disagree with. I agree that Detroit won't attract any top-tier free agents (which wouldn't really make sense for the direction of our team anyway) or even upper-mid tier free agents. I think that some guys looking for extra ice-time, extra money (we have the ability to overpay), etc. will be willing to sign in Detroit though.

In the ACGM, I included a Eriksson cap dump I like and some realistic free agent signings. We'd still have over $6 million in cap which would be enough for another cap dump or an increase in salary to the free agent signings.

I like what you wrote here, well said, now all that aside how's Boeser and Eriksson for a 7th sound?

I'm happy that Detroit fans like that Eriksson/Demko deal. Ideally we would include a 3rd and maybe something small instead of a 2nd, but that basic structure should get it done.

I think that would be a steal for Detroit. I feel like I've said this a million times but I see Eriksson as worth a 1st+3rd or Demko+2nd. I haven't paid too much attention to what Boeser would cost (mostly because I don't think Vancouver is stupid enough to do it) but I'm guessing it's more than a 1st+3rd.

I agree. Ideally it would be a 2nd but it's not like the whole trade would be thrown away if Vancouver wouldn't include a 2nd. The basic structure works well for both sides though as Vancouver can afford to lose Demko since Markstrom is their long-term starter and Detroit could potentially add their future goalie and a somewhat good draft pick.

100%. There are no quick fixes to this team. I've pretty much accepted that at best we'll be about 5th from the bottom and at worst we'll finish last by a lot again. I just hope that even if we do finish last that it's not by 23 points.

I think they could take some cap dumps in additon to Eriksson, as long as they only have one year left on their contract. So the risk is low, you get picks for them and if they perform well you can even flip them at the deadline.

I think the Red Wings could also consider trading players like Filppula while retaining half of his salary for a pick. To take one more player with a pick. I think the season ahead of them will just be one that will be forgotten soon. Kind of like the season the Leafs had in the year before Matthews.

I left $6 mil in cap space to take another dump from the highest bidder. Pretty much all of our expiring UFA’s will be traded at the deadline. We’ll definitely be bad again next year and will be in contention for a top pick.

I wonder whether we might be better off trading rather than touching UFAs. I really like trying to get Stepan off Arizona. His $6.5mil cap hit is high, and i've gotta imagine they would want to spend those dollars on Hall, might even get a pick or prospect packaged with him.

He could be the second cap dump if Arizona gave us a good deal. He can still play but the cap hit definitely gives him negative value. We won't need to touch any big UFA's but I like the idea of signing some guys to 1 year deals to fill out the roster and to provide leadership to some of the younger guys. We can also flip them at the deadline for more futures.

Yes, Maybe they can already some at the begining, to take some more on to move later.

Would you consider moving Larkin in a couple of seasons? I mean chances are hight that you draft a centre this season and probably also next season (if you win the lottery as you should have this season)

Forreal, although I think the prospect of a Zadina/Stepan/Fabbri line below the MLB line would be very good. And as you say, at that cap the value is still negative. Great potential. I think that might help us to avoid some mis-steps with UFAs. I worry about Galchenyuk, theres too much smoke for there not to be a fire with that guy, theres an issue somewhere.

Moving more guys now to take on cap hits could be considered but it probably wouldn't be more than one guy.

Honestly, I think Larkin will be a Red Wing for life. He was born in Michigan and will likely be named our captain this season. That being said, it's impossible to tell what kind of state our team will be in a few years from now. But I would be pretty shocked to see him traded. And a centre can always move to wing.

I could see Stepan as a legitimate 2C for us. All the free agents I signed to 1 year deals so there would be nothing that would cost us that much. Galchenyuk I signed as a guy that could use top 6 minutes for a bounce back season but it could be someone else too (maybe Granlund?).

I can't see Detroit picking up galchenyuk when they could just let one of their own try to make the roster (Joe veleno)

Yzerman would be a fool to not take that and run.

Demko has great potential, Vancity has always been a goalie graveyard as they turn on goalies sooooo fast (RIP Loungo) with a team like detroit and the understanding the team is growing the pressure would be way less
