Kessel was always hated for what he wasn't (an individual who can carry a franchise by himself), instead of loved for what he was (a top 15 scorer in the NHL).

He always need a Toews to his Kane in Toronto and didn't have it

It takes a lot of gall to question the commitment of a guy who only missed 11 games with CANCER

Anyway in regards to retention the story at the time was if Kunitz waived and agreed to come there would be no retention. But he wouldn't and instead they traded Toronto spaling with a lower cap hit and Toronto had to retain to compensate.

I never knew the Kunitz thing. As a Sens fan, it makes me wonder what could have been....

They did not get the lotto pick as part of the Kessel trade. They got Kapanen, a late first (that they had to trade an early 2nd for) that they turned into Andersen and not much else.

This was for the guy who has been like 8th in league wide scoring since the trade AND they had to retain. It was a bad trade because Toronto nuked his value

I mean penguins got far less than that and he only raised his value since then. Maybe that value is fair and you aren’t realizing it. And yeah the result of them not having a superstar like kessel made them a lotto team. It’s all cause and effect. Anderson wouldn’t be obtained for less than a first and you got kappy.
