Saw a report on TSN about how UFA's asking prices are relative to the best contract/ player on their team. In the Avs case that is MacKinnon, a top 5 player in the league, on an absolute bargain of a deal. I can't see Mikko getting more than 9/yr.

The reason Marner's asking price is so high is because Dubas dumped 25% of his cap into JT and 34 at over $11m each

There are plenty of reasons for Marner reportedly getting 8 figures, he probably won't at the end of the day and will sign for 9.75 or something. A lot of that has to do with Toronto media.

Basing Rantanen's contract off of Mackinnon's is flawed. When Nate signed he was a consistent 50-60 point player so 6.3 made sense. Mikko has played 4 seasons, 3 of which were on pace for 85pts +

Look around, this isn't the NBA and it isn't all about money. Rantanen will take a team friendly deal on a contending Avalanche team that will see a cup within the next half decade.

But as a stand alone player, he is not worth more than Mackinnon which is why the contract value will be relative.

There's a line of thinking that suggests Marner and Rantanen get very similar contracts.

Agcm's mean nothing to me because they are done by fans.. I've done plenty myself.. marner is asking for Matthew's money and term because he is better than him, rantanen isnt better than MacKinnon, sure MacKinnon didnt breakout until he was locked up but rantanen cant say hes 4 mill a year better than mack. Where as marner is like I've been better than Matthew's for 2 years and you just gave him 11.6 for 5 years...

P.s. that Matthew's contract is ridiculous, buys up 1 year of UFA for all that money, the point of big money contracts is to buy up multiple UFA years

He did better with tavares, but before tavares he had kadri, still outscored Matthew's who had nylander, he also showed up.in the playoffs that year unlike matthews
