I adjusted Brouwer to a three year contract with a little more cash. Yeah, Calgary is in dire need of some legit goaltending since Kiprusoff left. I'm of the believe you need average goaltending to win. I just feel if you built a legit line-up around an average goalie, than you can win. Huet was the Hawks goaltender majority of the year during their first championship until Niemi took over, which again proves that point. I have put together other teams on here with Anderson with people ripping it, so that's what I don't understand.
You only need average goal tending if the rest of the team is really good - this roster is not quite there. In 2010, the Hawks had one of the best top 4-5 d-core in Keith, Seabrook, Hjammer, Campbell, and Buff and one of the best defensive forward cores (peak Hossa, for ex). 2013 was a pretty magical team too. In 2015, the Hawks were limited to a very good but aging top 4 defensemen group and their weakest forward core, so Crawford had to step up a bit. Last year, the Hawks had only 3 top defensemen, still aging (Seabrook had some wear and tear as the season went on lbr), and so Crawford had to pick up a lot of the slack a lot.
If Seabrook does not rebound and one of Kempny/TVR/Pokka does not turn into a top 4 defenseman ala Hjammer in 2010, then the Hawks would need more than average goal tending especially since the above suggested forward core is not as strong as years past (defensively, at the very least). That's why people sometimes rip the goalie exchanging - they're not mocking the idea of an average goalie being able to carry a team, they're doubtful an average goalie could carry the suggested forward/defenses that often are listed here. I personally just don't know if Darling is ready to be a starter and most scouts think Johansson is a Swedish, older version of Raanta (so decent backup, not a starter, going to be adjusting to NHL, and not Q's 'type' of preferred goalie).
Also jtn, if the Hawks had $4.25m to spend, they'd probably use it to keep Ladd. He's a more proven player than Brouwer, and Q didn't exactly trust Brouwer deep into the playoffs in 2010, if time on ice is anything to go by (he was benched for half the Vancouver series, he got bumped down to the 3rd and 4th lines as the playoffs progressed, and ended the Philly series with an average of like 7 minutes in the last 3 games). Giving Brouwer that kind of money for one playoffs would probably bite the Hawks as much as giving Bickell the $4m after one good playoffs.
