This doesn’t exactly show me that Washington has faith in the immediate future with Ilya Samsonov. At least anybody with Samsonov in any dynasty fantasy leagues now know that he’s not getting any games under his belt for the next 3 years
Lots of backups signing 3 year deals this year. From a Jets perspective this contract signals the absolute minimum AAV that Winnipeg can bring Brossoit back for.

I'm guessing the three year deals are due to the Seattle expansion draft. The third year allows them to be exposed.

So just like this contract makes you wonder what’s going to happen to Samsonov, if the Jets sign Brossoit for three years it makes you wonder what’s going to happen to Comrie.

You nailed it. Contrary to what some others are saying, this actually supports the idea that the Caps are going with Samsonov long-term as they’re ensuring they have a different goalie that satisfies the exposure requirements.
It's an interesting call to make, but it makes sense. Copley's been good for us, so if Samsonov isn't quite ready to step in, he can stay as the backup. I'm more intrigued as to what this means for Holtby. His contract expires after next season and there's no sense in signing him to a long term extension since Samsonov is the future. No room for Ilya to move up in the organization at that point.
All of the chatter here surrounding Samsonov is a bit off base. Samsonov is still the goalie of the future in WAS in the same way Hart was in PHI at the start of this season. Signing Copley to this deal does 2 things. First off he is an affordable backup in the near future and has a cap hit low enough to be sent down without cap implications. Secondly when the expansion draft comes along he will meet the exposure requirements. Holtby's future contract will be decided when that time comes and as WAS has proven over the years they are not afraid to move goaltenders (Varlamov, Grubaer).

Thank you hockeyfan for putting it so well. Everyone in this thread should read your comment. This contract is about locking up a competent backup and ensuring expansion draft requirements will be met. Nothing - AT ALL - to do with Samsonov.
Like the deal and lets face it. Samsonov is 2 years from being of any impact in the NHL. Can't handle the pressure of an AHL schedule and talent level.
