Sabres absolutely say yes

Not bc Okposo is a bad player
He had a tough year recovering from a medical issue at the end of last year that almost killed him,
thus keeping him from training in the offseason
He mentioned in his end of year interviews how it took him quite a while to get into stride, and he never felt quite right

We’d move him bc he’s 29,
and it looks like we are gonna need at least 2 more years to become a playoff team
So it makes sense to move his contract if we can get any kind of reasonable return
(Which two 2nd rounders is)
Otherwise,
he’s slated to play with Richel this coming season where it would be surprising if he didn’t top 20goals & 60pts
At that point he’d definitely have enough value that we could move his contract

He’s still a quality player
Probably just a little overpaid

Well done! This is one of the few original proposals I have seen in some time. The team is strong, but we cannot rely on both Deangelo and Bear making the NHL. You have cap space, why not sign someone like Mike Green?

NYR: No. Taking Russell should be enough to jump from 25 to 10. Take DeAngelo and the third out and it's a deal. But good proposal.

I agree that Okposo is a good player and 2 seconds is about correct. His pts ranked 31st and his goals ranked 36th among all NHL RW, even this very bad season. HIs 2nd half was much better if that could be projected across the entire season, his pts would have ranked 18th. So his production is well worth 2 2nds.

Five stars

Only thing I would like is for the sabres to not retain if all we're getting in return is two seconds.

russell is a brutal contract..

if I'm the rangers the only do this if its:

Russel and 2018 1st for tampas 1st and nj's 2nd (and maybe a 'meh' prospect like neives [bottom six forward, kinda like a 2b center in terms of his potential, not really a full 2nd liner but serviceable in desperation])

rangers are looking to move a later pick for a young player or to move up in the draft, i think if this trade is done pre lottery on the 28th that the rangers may take the gamble.

edit: not a bad take on the basis for the trade though

Sabres fan: Hell no, they arent taking a 2 million dollar penalty for a player that still produces. He was recovering from a concussion and his second half of the season was much better. I'd expect with a better supporting cast next year in Buffalo he'll get back to 60 points. His biggest question will be his health sitting out more time due to concussions this year. But he had 27 points after december in 40 or so games (i forgot how many games he missed, at least 3)

If theyre moving on from him because the want to get younger, they can get much more for him. If they dont, they sit on him and let him improve his value. 2 2nds and retaining 2 million is such a low ball offer for him

I missed the part where we were retaining 2mil
That’s making me change my mind
I think we’d just keep him,
play him with Eichel for the year so his stats go back up to something like 20+ goals & 60ish points
Then he will be tradable without us having to retain salary

Idk that we’d get a lot for him though
Maybe a 1st & a “b” level prospect,
or a good prospect & a 2nd?
Idk? Tough to speculate at this point

Back to this trade though...
make it one 2nd, & no salary retained, and Buffalo probably does it

Although i do think he bounces back,
there is a risk of continued concussions
So even though that’s not a great return,
we get his contract off the books
And that would be of value to us
