big overpayment for oel. he's not that great, bieska has really slowed down. probably doesn't leave his California home anyway. the cap doesn't work for 2018/19 or 2019/20. it's a real shame that posters don't under the nuisances the salary cap.

I like some of it, especially as a Leafs fan. I am not sure about trading Gardiner and Rosen, but getting OEL would be pretty much worth it. I also question replacing those two with Bieksa, even though I do like Bieksa. My other question is, would the trade work with a 2020 1st or 2nd instead of missing out on almost an entire draft class of prospects. Or... maybe trade Leivo for a pick and bring up Andreas Johnson (sorry if it is spelled wrong). Salary, (and future signings) are my other worry here...

That's 56 million dollars in cap. Then you have to sign Matthews, Nylander, Kapanan, Leivo, OEL, Hainsey, Borgman. You don't have the cap to do it.

That was my initial thought..

Matthews is going to get 13-15 easily.. Marner is going to want Draisaitl money 8.5-9 and Nylander will want 7.5... So those 3 will cost 30 million per minimum combined.

It will be interesting to see how Toronto handles "cap hell" in the next couple of years.... I'll bet Lou Lamoriello will wish he's in hell at that point.

This is why you gotta win when these kids are cost controlled, and as a Hawks fan I know this all too well.

Signing Tavares and trading for OEL is absolutely out of the question if the Leafs want any depth at all around their core... IMO, Lou Lamoriello is going to be forced to trade one of the pieces at some point for some breathing room and it will be highly unpopular when it happens.

Then again I think the addition of Seattle and a stronger economy will certainly help with the cap.

But you don't make long-term commitments now just because you can afford it ....... That will bite you in the butt down the road and trust me there is a "down the road".

Of course Toronto could do this, win cups but when the time comes to dismantle to get under cap the city would riot - it would be anarchy lol..

This is pretty much the definition of ‘’winning when these kids are cost controlled, and as a Hawks fan I know this all too well.’’
I’m also full aware that this would mean trading or bridging Marner/Nylander or letting OEL walk. Worth it? Depends if they win the cup but with that team id like their chances

Also they idea the Matthews is for sure signing for 13-15 is silly. Could he demand 15? Yes. Would he? Highly doubtful, in the NHL it’s all about respect, security, and comparable contracts. 11-12.5 is much more likely.

Ya I don’t love bringing in Bieska but the fact that he’s a RHD and can sign for only one year is why I did it. He’s better than polak right? (Fun fact: he grew up and owns a house here) and ya I have no idea really what Arizona wants for picks but I like the trade Leivo callup Johnson idea

Well, like I said you can try to win now by bringing in OEL and JT but make no mistake, when it come time to get Matthews or Marner re-signed.... Well lol.. The pitchforks and fire will come out because that will be impossible and GM's will be offering little for assets to clear cap space.

Obviously you want to win Cups now but is it worth it if it destroys chances down the road? it's a gamble.... It worked for the Hawks but the Hawks never signed a guy for 10 million to win a Cup.... I mean if Toronto did this it would be 10x worse than the Hawks ever had it..

I mean the notion a team will take a player like Tavares or OEL after you won cups for picks alone just wont happen, and the notion Tavares will sign without a NTC is funny....

My point is there are massive problems here.....And let's not forget this gives Toronto a chance to win the Cup - not give them the Cup...

Toronto should just sit pat, make depth improvements and draft and let their youngsters develop.... They shouldn't sign marquee UFA long-term because it will hurt their future.

Bringing in OEL and Tavares is just not possible

It’s completely possible, you can write 19 paragraphs about the Blackhawks and it will still be possible. If you can bring in superstar players you make room
