Taking on talent/selling cap relief.

Created by: Eli
Team: 2017-18 Vegas Golden Knights
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 22, 2018
Published: Jan. 22, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The final years of the contracts for Weber, Phaneuf, and Bogosian look rough. Teams might pay a lot of draft picks to get out of them. That still leaves Vegas with more than enough cap room and talent to trade for and sign John Carlson long term.

Lets mention firstly how VGK are first in the whole league right now and probably wont do anything dumb. Secondly Weber is still Quality regardless of contract. Still a top 10 man in the league, so that trade was horrendous.

Both Ottawa and Montreal say No, None of those pieces are worth both Phaneuf and Weber not even close.

Still top ten in what? Number of years left on his contract? He wouldn't be top ten in points on the above roster. Maybe among defensemen?

Let's see: Carlson, Miller, Schmidt, Weber, Theodore. yep. Top ten.

Weber's sixteen points are three ahead of Phaneuf's, but Phaneuf still starts most of his shifts in the defensive zone.

Weber has switched to playing sheltered minutes, and plays over a minute per game less than John Carlson, with fewer blocks and fewer takeaways. Fewer giveaways, too, but you have to have the puck to get those.

No.... A 1st, a 2nd, and a 3rd to take on Weber's remaining salary of over sixty million dollars, minus Garrison's remaining salary of one million, which would be less embarrassing for the Habs, who currently at least might give him a sweater and let him watch from the balcony.

The actual trade would also contain three longshot prospects heading to Montreal, so that Bergevin could talk about the future, and how he's still doing a great job, just like he did when he traded for Weber...

I meant to say top 10 d-man in the league, and I really think he is. Don't look at MTL that is even making the best goalie in the world look bad. Regardless, MTL says no. They like what they have in Weber and wouldnt want to sell him for scraps

Heck, without the above deals, Weber wouldn't be top ten in scoring on Vegas (https://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/VEG/2018.html):

Maybe he's injured? Maybe he's depressed. I hope he gets better, but I'm keeping it real. Paying another sixty million dollars to someone with one more point than Deryk Engelland, but fewer hits, in more minutes.... that's not something Vegas is going to just volunteer for.

so in three years habs would go from Subban to Garrison and less picks ? That is embarrassing lol

Maybe he's injured? Maybe he's depressed. I hope he gets better, but I'm keeping it real. Paying another sixty million dollars to someone with one more point than Deryk Engelland, but fewer hits, in more minutes.... that's not something Vegas is going to just volunteer for.

keeping it real? Weber for Garrison? And give this year 1st round pick (top 10)? Are you really serious ?? LOL

so in three years habs would go from Subban to Garrison and less picks ? That is embarrassing lol

I can't truly know what they were thinking, but when the organization's brass sat down and decided to trade a recent Norris trophy winner signed until his mid thirties for a less-recent Norris trophy runner-up, signed through his early forties... they were gambling on immediate success that hasn't materialized. I might be wrong in suggesting it's worth a lottery pick for them to dump his contract. He's still a very marketable name, and maybe someone will take him on at half salary to sell tickets through a rebuild, or they could always give him a raise to retire and join their coaching staff (taking himself off their salary cap numbers)?

I meant to say top 10 d-man in the league, and I really think he is. Don't look at MTL that is even making the best goalie in the world look bad. Regardless, MTL says no. They like what they have in Weber and wouldnt want to sell him for scraps

Sometimes people have bad years and come back. Sometimes people have bad years and then have worse years. I don't personally know Shea Weber. He is still top ten in ice time. But he's got the fewest points of anyone in the top twenty: https://www.foxsports.com/nhl/stats?category=ICE+TIME&group=1&time=0

Weber used to play the most minutes in the league, start 60% of his shifts in his defensive zone, and pace his team in points, assists, hits, and who knows what else. This year is not exactly unfolding that way.

There could well be team problems in Montreal that are impacting most of their players' performance. But when you trade your Norris Trophy winner for a guy who's won multiple gold medals, you kind of expect him to lead the team through whatever comes their way. That doesn't seem to be happening.

Weber played with Mete, Schlemko and Benn in a team that score 2.25 goals per game.. Weber is a great D if paired with minimum a top 4 not depth players like DS or Benn.. Mete is not a nhl caliber guy yet so Weber's bad start this season is on Bergefail and no one else. Rather have Weber in the stand than Garrisson on the ice, we already have 5 guys like him.

This doesn't make a lot of sense at all. Maybe the NYR deal could be seen as plausible, but the rest are way in the deep end of the pool far away from reality and fairness.

If the value of a player depended only on his past achievements on the ice and name recognition, I would completely agree with you.

Since it also has to do with team needs, salary cap considerations, contract status, pending free agency, age and conditioning of the player, current performance, and team standings, though....
