Description
Playing with the idea of a mini-rebuild.
DA has reportedly expressed interest in Kovalchuk. This is the ideal scenario--adding one top-six player at each forward position, without giving up core youth.
I would have found a way to add Hoffman, too--but waiting to see how that situation is resolved. If he can be brought in without risk of locker room trouble or media drama, he would be a good fit should a deal for RoR not work out.
Moving Allen and adding Grubauer, and pairing Grubauer with Hutton on matching contracts, seems like a good way to manage the crease until one of our goalie prospects pushes for a starting role, or a better option becomes available.
Would also have liked to have added one or both of Roussel and/or Grabner. If Kovalchuk signs elsewhere and we're forced to play Thompson and Kyrou in the #2 and #3 RW slots, there should be ample money to sign the extra experienced role players.
Thompson is wasted on the 4th line, but he can spell Kyrou or Thomas on games when Soshnikov gets worked in, and Brodziak and Blais/Sanford are capable enough offensively, and they'll still get plenty of chances to contribute.

GMBots says you should really figure out how to get Hoff as you are not going to have ROR on your roster if that is what you are offering.

I know Buffalo fans think they're going to get four firsts and a rookie franchise player for their star center. Good luck with that, but I'm not interested in litigating that foolishness in this thread. I'll assume the Blues can land him for what I've offered, or something comparable, and deal with the disappointment if it doesn't come to pass. Since you think my disappointment is so inevitable, it should be no skin off your back that I maintain the illusion.

Just one question for you..... switch it around and your team was dealing a legit center to a team that you know values him as their #1 Center would you really accept what is being offered....

A late first (#29, Sabres own #32) and a Dman that "Six years after being a first-round pick, the jury is still out on Jordan Schmaltz as an NHL defenseman."* and 2 cap dumps. You know the Sabres will keep him if they arent intrigued, right? They are not in a position where they need to move him, and will get much better offers. STL traded Stastny with 50% retained (3.5 mill) with only 3 months left on his contract for that first a decent prospect (for STL) and a 4th. Your making the Sabres take back 7.85 mill in bad cap with a 24 y/o mediocre prospect and the same first, for a better center with much more term left and you take a Sabres 4th.
