Description
JT will get paid but I don't think any team will fork over more than 11M per year. Avs could be an appealing destination for Tavares. Young team with a lot of potential. Sign Stone to an offer sheet. Maybe a little overpaid but definitely puts Ottawa in a tough spot (haha). Plus we'd get to keep Ottawa's 1st and third round picks. Not sure how to handle goaltending situation.. varly is good when healthy but he's proven year after year he can't stay healthy. Seems pretty risky having francouz as the backup having never played in North America so I expect the Avs to sign someone with a little more experience.

Your compensation for Stone is off. I'm like 99% sure that the max you could offer for the 1/2/3 compensation is in the neighbourhood of $6.7M. I recommend checking the offer sheet calculator. Works out to the total AAV/5 years needing to be =< $8M (or somewhere around there).

Regardless, if Ottawa is serious about moving Karlsson then they should be serious about rebuilding. Given how their pick situation looks this year and next, they'd be wise to let Stone sign that OS.

Any normal team would happily match. I doubt Melnyk would be interested in allowing Dorion to sign Stone for anything over $6.75M.

Stone's value is around $7.5M, the Sens match that in a second happily. Melnyk had no problem with signing Bobby Ryan to his deal, signing MacArthur to his, Hoffman to his, had no problem bringing in Phaneuf despite his contract, and no problem bringing in Gaborik despite his. Now our second best player needs a fair contract? Yeah, $7.5 gets matched. Gonna need much more than $7.5, and then we're looking at even more picks. If Stone is facing $7.5Mx8 years from us (likely), and $8Mx5 years from another team... there's almost no benefit to signing with the other team. Going to have to bump the price up more, and then we're looking at more picks leaving.

the sens have made it absolutely clear that signing Stone is one of their Top Priorities, probably right after trading/signing Karlsson. and looking at the Contracts of Ryan and Phaneuf when he was here, Melnyk is clearly comfortable in paying a player in that price range. They'll pay him because he's the guy in Ottawa once Karlsson is gone.
