Description
Not saying this is going to happen, but if Lou is serious about going after Nash then the only assets I would give up for him would be mid-round draft picks and mid-level prospects to obtain 1.5 years of him. I still think he is an elite level player and would be an upgrade on any player the Leafs have on the left wing. He could immediately slot in on the 1st or 2nd line, playing with either Matthews or Kadri. This also helps give you the option of trading JVR (even though Lou said he was not being traded) at the TDL to upgrade the 3rd C or 4th C position, or even upgrade the blueline, or even replace the picks you gave up for Nash. The trade options are there.

Another option would be slotting Marleau at Centre and playing with Nash and Connor Brown. This helps with Browns development and also gives you 4 really scary looking lines going into the playoffs. This also pushes Bozak down as your 4C, so the need for going after an upgrade at C at the TDL is not there anymore.

This trade gives Columbus the forward depth they need for the playoffs and gives Toronto depth on the blue line. There is no salary retained on Johnson unless Toronto throws in a pick, but with the term he has remaining it is best not to do that.

" would be an upgrade on any player the Leafs have on the left wing." I don't think you have been watching the leafs for a few years, or have been watching nash for a few years.

Nash is better than JVR, Komarov and Hyman

That's way too much to give up for Nash and this is coming from a guy that wants to see him finish his career a Leaf.
Jack Johnson is not a good hockey player, period. He doesn't help this team. If the Leafs are going to bring in a D, it has to be someone like McDonagh or it is not worth doing.

Obvious thumbs up to dumping Polak and Martin.

Present day Rick Nash is not better than JVR. He provides more scoring then Komarov or Hyman, but both of those players are quicker and more defensively-reliable so it's not a fair comparison. The trade proposed sells low on Andreas Borgman, which the Leafs would never do, and giving up so many draft picks is not what this current leafs management is all about. Rick Nash is not a Leaf UNLESS JVR is moved out first, which, at this point, I don't see happening.

Why is it too much to give up? The leafs finish around top 5 in the standings and those mid-round picks are really high. Josh Leivo will never get a real opportunity to play on this team and Borgman is the only real good asset you take a risk on losing. You need to give up something in order to get Nash as there will be a bidding war for him. With Dermott and Liljegren in our system, Toronto can use Borgman as a good trade pieces without worrying about our losing much of our defensive depth in the future.
