I'm not all that convinced that Kane is a better player than Mikheyev-- The Athletic's player cards, for instance, view them as equally good. Kane's still a bit more expensive (I'm not sure why Vancouver retained $700,000 but they did), but I imagine the Hawks would insist on a 2nd round pick, even if without retention, over a 3rd with retention. The other factor is, they already made the Mikheyev trade. Even if the Kane trade made just as much sense as the Mikheyev trade, the Hawks might have bigger priorities than making both trades.
