Description
Explanations:
Hathaway fits the role of what the Sabres are currently looking for.

Bennett has only 1 year left and probably will be too expensive for the Panthers to keep considering they need to resign Lundell, Montour, and Reinhart this year, as well as Verhaeghe and Ekblad next year (+Bennett if they were to keep him). Sabres get a guy that fits their new identity well. Panthers get a top B level prospect who probably can't differentiate himself enough from the likes of Quinn, Peterka, Skinner, and Tuch to crack a top 6 role. He could also fill in the gaps in the future for the Panthers when they run into more cap trouble.

San Jose takes Krebs because it's probably not a great year again for them, and he still has a decent amount of upside even though he has kind of lost in the shuffle of the Sabres lineup. Going to the Sharks would allow him to play in a more prominent role and potentially have a good couple seasons at a low cost for the Sharks. I feel it's low risk, high reward for San Jose.

Free Agent Explanations;
Looking for guys who can play physical, fight, win faceoffs, and play hard defense to fill out bottom 6 and bottom pair.

As always, please leave comments so that I know if I've messed up completely or actually gotten it right in terms of value.

Even if I bought into needing this to win, I'd argue that these are moves you make /after/ your team or core has already gotten you to the playoffs. They need to see if the main guys can do that this year under a different coach before they can invest in toughness and other needs on the fringes. Because if they can't you're gunna want those assets/cap space to start making fundamental changes to the core.

Flyers probably hang onto Hathaway. They like him for a locker room presence. Though Flyers like Krebs, and would probably give you that same 4th and 7th for him.

Sabres are not trading Krebs for that. If anything Sabres package him for a 3rd line C or another D man
