Why, though? Shatty is closing in on being a UFA. Seems like a bad idea.

Chiarelli will over pay to get a top 2 dman for the long term. It's impossible for Edmonton to sign a top end dman through free agency, so his chances are better of doing it through a trade. Chiarelli signed Chara in 2006 to a $7.5 mill per year deal when the cap was $39 mill., or 19% of the total cap. That's the equivalent of $14.2 mill per year with today's cap. He values the position more than other GM's. Unless Shattenkirk is adamantly against going to Edmonton, I think Chiarelli waives a monster contract in front of him to sell him on coming to Edmonton for the next 8 years.

In order for Edmonton to agree to this trade, they would need Shattenkirk to agree to a long term deal. If not, then no deal.

Close, that's a Garth Snow special *80 years for $300,000,000. It's a very reasonable $3.75M until he's 99 years old.

RNH AND a first seems like a bit much. If I am an Oilers fan, I would think a 2/3 round pick may be more tolerable. Especially, as the guys above me put it, that Shatty is close to UFA status
