2023-2024 NHL Discussion Thread #6: The Quest for Lord Stanley's Cup
Just think this is fitting to be my last post (as the name suggests):
I think a lot of teams are sleeping on the Leafs this upcoming year…
Do they have things they need to improve? Yes
But this is also the best goalie tandem and DCorp the Leafs have had in the Matthews era while losing Bertuzzi up front (which sucks, but isn’t that much of a loss when you factor the emergence of McMann and another step form Knies in the playoffs)
This fact is into my opinion that people like Jessie Blake and others, whom have them as 4rth or 3rd in their division as underrating them…
Obviously, this probably isn’t the worst but whatever, CF is shutting down anyway
But as a famous TV show once said:
That’s all, folks!

And I think both would be useful in their own ways
JVR can provide net front on the Matthews or 3rd line and Barabonov is fast (I believe) which makes that Matthews-Domi connection great as you have 3 guys on 3 different speeds

2023-2024 NHL Discussion Thread #6: The Quest for Lord Stanley's Cup
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>WJC_Enthusiast</b></div><div>I know we're still early in the offseason, but since this site is closing in a few days, here are 8 hot takes for the 2024-25 NHL season:
1-After losing Monahan, Toffoli, Dillon and not really improving the roster, the Jets miss the playoffs
2-After losing Montour, OEL, Stolarz and Lomberg, the Panthers may the playoffs as a Wild Card teaam
3-Elias Lindholm proves everyone wrong about the deal, scores 25 goals and 80 points and is nominated for the Selke
4-Lindy Ruff proves he still has it and leads a very young Sabres team to a 100 points season
5-Alexis Lafrenière becomes a PPG player
6-I don't really believe this one, but this is a hot take so who cares, the Leafs, powered by Berube, a rejuvenated PP, OEL, Tanev and Stolarz, win the President's Trophy
7-Everyone adjusts to them and the Canucks make the playoffs as a Wild Card team
8-The Devils, boosted by the return of Hamilton, a new coach, a new goalie, Dillon, Pesce and Noesen, finish 10 points above their nearest challenger in the Metro</div></div>
I would love if 6 happens…
And before you say anything, it’s not like they’ve done anything in the playoffs

They are looking for a forward but no need to rush. First need to see if they want to move anyone, see if its gonna cost them anything or what they can get back, then go to work</div></div>
Just seems odd that nothing seems to be in the works, with the outlier of knowledge being they want a forward

The Oil are in a tough spot; not sure offer sheet is likely but we’ve soon how hard it is to move out money and now every team knows Oilers have to…will be interesting</div></div>
It just seems like Treliving wants another piece up front and yet didn’t go after Skinner or someone else, so have to think he’s got something up his sleeve

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AnonymousSensFan</b></div><div>You think Utah will give it back for a 5th? Lol, they will rake you over the coals.
In any case, if Toronto can "make it work", why can't Edmonton?
Fans living in fantasy land that their GM's will make an offer sheet, screwing over other teams. That whole Montreal/Carolina offer sheet situation is exactly why they don't happen. Can't imagine a GM that resisgns Matt Murray is smart to begin with</div></div>
That’s usually the going rate for retention and the move up a couple picks in the draft in the 2nd round, so that’s the reasoning for the 5th, Utah gets an additional 5th as compensation like they would for retention
Difference is, Toronto can send down Murray (875k)+Timmins(1.1 mill)+Webber(875K), all 3 expected to be in the minors anyway and they can sign Dewar, that and a Jarnkrok trade (whom is likely getting traded anyway as he isn’t a “Berube” or “Treliving” player) gives them enough cap to offersheet Holloway with nobody they still need to sign, EDM signs that and they are 5.6 mill over the cap (5.5 less if they dump Kane, which still puts them over the cap) and they still need Broberg to sign (whom will likely get 1.4-1.6 mill himself)…
I can’t imagine you’d understand this, however, because you don’t understand the point of signing a cheap 3rd goalie with experience in case of injuries, you’d rather throw a young goalie to the wolves instead…

2. Toronto cap even have success against Eastern teams in the playoffs, let alone western teams.
3. Most importantly, Toronto does not have their own 2nd round pick in 2025 draft, and therefore, your offer sheet is invalid. Can't use another team's pick, for obvious reasons.</div></div>
Toronto can make it work, EDM is already over the cap, before a Broberg or Holloway deal.. Holloway at 3.2 would mean EDM would need to move out more cap than just Kane to match and stay under, not even factoring in Broberg
Toronto does well va West teams, like Florida+NYR+BOS+other eastern teams… but why would you bother with that? It doesn’t fit your narrative
I don’t think you actually looked at what this ACGM is then, what was the 2nd trade? It was Toronto acquiring their own pick back to use…
