(CBJ/LAK/PHI) - 2023 1st (LAK), 2024 2nd (CBJ) for Petersen, Walker, Grans, 2024 2nd (LAK) for Provorov, Hodgson, Connauton
Los Angeles Kings:
Paid Helge Grans + 2024 2nd to dump Cal Petersen ---- Fine
Traded Sean Walker for Ivan Provorov's salary retention + a couple of AHL scrubs ---- Awful
Kings lose the trade
Columbus Blue Jackets:
Traded #22 overall pick + 2024 2nd for Ivan Provorov at 4.725 million x 2 ---- Good
Blue Jackets win the trade
Philadelphia Flyers:
Traded Ivan Provorov without being the team that retains his salary for #22 overall + 2024/2025 2nd ---- Good
Traded a couple of AHL scrubs for Sean Walker ---- Good
Received Helge Grans + 2024 2nd for taking Cal Petersen ---- Fine
Flyers win the trade
In conclusion ...
Flyers and Blue Jackets win the trade
Kings lose the trade

Did LA really use Grans Helge and a 2nd to dump off Petersen?

There's reason to believe that the Flyers D corps actually got better through this trade:

PHI could likely get a little something for Walker half retained at the deadline on top of all this. Tidy work for a rookie GM.

The offseason is indeed starting off with a bang. Pretty fair deal all around. Columbus gets another top/second pair LHD to help with Werenski, parting with a surplus 1st round pick and early 2nd rounder. The price might be a tad steep, but the market was set with Chychrun from earlier this season. Hopefully gets Provorov to bounce back to his good days by giving him a steady defensive parter.
For LA, the numbers are what matter here. They take on an effective $9,212,500 in real money in exchange for $5,625,000 in cap savings in 23-24 and $2,975,000 in savings in 24-25. Taking from its surplus of prospects, moving Helge Grans and 54th overall to create valuable cap space (opportunity cost) to help solidify its team as a true contender in the West.
And for Philadelphia, man does Danny B hit a homerun. Able to move a player that doesn’t fit the culture or window and save those Comcast big wigs almost 3 million is quite the deal. 22nd, 2 future 2nd round picks, and Grans for Provorov and taking on an additional cap space of $900,000 this year and saving $1,750,000 the next? He gets to replenish the picks lost from the Fletcher area and still has key trade chips (Hart, Konecny, Hayes) to play with?

LA: Receives valuable cap space
Columbus: What the heck are they doing

As another Flyers fan chiming in, I think you’re totally off base. Saying Columbus doesn’t NEED Hayes may be true but it’s been widely reunited by national and local guys that Chuck and Jarmo started a Hayes trade at the deadline to revisit in the summer so even though you may think Hayes isn’t needed, your GM may think differently. The Flyers aren’t in need of cap either, we are rebuilding so not signing big time free agents so there is no need to shed cap he just isn’t in the Flyers plans moving forward so retaining Hayes isn’t a cap dump. Nobody on earth is getting paid to take Hayes at ~50% retention that’s just insane. The guys was a point per game player for most of the season and an all-star. While the ask may not be anything crazy the Flyers aren’t going to pay anyone to take him while retaining that’s just hilarious.

The best chance for the Flyers to gain assets is to gain cap room to take on bad contracts. But to do that they need to clear cap.</div></div>
Lmao that makes no sense. So your idea of us gaining assets is to spend assets to get rid of players to get assets to take players back? At that point you’re barely breaking even that makes no sense. You wouldn’t spend assets to get relatively the same assets back that’s delusional. We already have around $15 million in cap coming up to take on bad contracts nobody is paying someone to take Hayes lol.

That's probably a top ten pick, why even make that trade for Girard? They would have Sanheim, York, Zamula and Andrae. Unnecessary.

Philly is absolutely not going to do that. They aren't trading their 23 1st and another 1st for a 25 year old winger when they are heading towards a rebuild.

It's not technically a 2nd from Arizona, Philly will be receiving a compensatory pick for not signing Jay OBrien, so he's just adding a second for aesthetics I believe

Because Brannstron+Forberg and a 1st and 2nd aren't getting you both Hart and Konecny. You'd be lucky to get a 3rd for Brannstrom and you won't get much either for Forsberg. Not enough for both players. Not even close.
