I’ll never understand capfriendly users thinking trading a player means he sucks. Like teams don’t trade good players ever. You have to trade value to get value. MP is a really good second pair shutdown defenseman. His analytics prove that and he’s on a great contract.

Hello there sharks fans
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tkecanuck341</b></div><div>I don't think you realize how much "significant salary retention" costs. Toronto had to pay a 1st round pick to Carolina to get them to eat Marleau's $6.25M contract for 1 season, and Marleau wasn't even going to play for them.
There's 5 years remaining on Karlsson's contract, so at $4M retention, you're asking San Jose to eat more than 3x of what Carolina had to eat on Marleau. You're also getting a top quality offensive defenseman, even if he is a defensive liability these days.
As you can see from the chart above, he's still an offensive "star" in the league, he just has a bad reputation because he plays on a bad team and is suspect in his own zone.</div></div>
Right Toronto (the team Marleau was on) traded a 1st round pick to Carolina to get them to buyout Marleau which was 6.25 million dead cap. If SJ wants to get rid of at least some of that Karlsson cap hit because he hasn’t been the 11+ million dman that they hoped he’d be, they won’t get much. They probably won’t have to pay to get rid of him because they aren’t hurting terribly for space and Karlsson is still playing decently, but he’s not spectacular. So I doubt even with 40-50% retention he gets more than a 1st and top prospect at best.

U really think you’re gonna get something, for a 30+ year old goal scorer, who:
-doesn’t score at the rate he used to (scores at about a 15goal per full season pace now)
-misses half the season with injury
-costs a 5.5mil cap hit (eliminating many teams that simply can’t fit him in)
-and has a 10years NTC which eliminates even more teams
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sure pal, good luck with that

Well thanks for clarifying that you don’t watch the pens. That was pretty obvious before though lol

Pens scoff at the Canucks trade lol. Take out the 1st going to Vancouver and the pens still probably decline. They aren’t in the business of getting worse lol. Unless they were to sign someone like Lyubushkin to play with Matheson instead. But no way they overpay for Rutta to play with Matheson. Yikes

No there isn’t a big difference between those cap hits lol. So it doesn’t make a difference.
The only difference that is there is Zucker only has 1 year left on his contract. Whereas Hornqvist had 3, Gudbranson had 2, Pearson had 2. And also the stats accumulated with Pittsburgh in the previous year with Pittsburgh, which Zucker had one of the best between all of their recent players that everyone on here claimed would cost at least a 2nd to get rid of.

It won’t cost anything to get out of Zuckers contract lol. Anyone that thinks it would simply doesn’t watch hockey outside of their own team. But it’s par for the course here when it comes to pens players lol. They said it would take at least a 2nd to get rid of Gudbranson, at least a 2nd to get rid of Bjugstad, at least a 1st to get rid of Hornqvist, etc. The pens always seem to find a way to not have to pay to get rid of player. Zucker is better than all of those players. Why would the pens spend a 1st and a top 4 defenseman just to bring back Hornqvist? Who by the way they traded because he doesn’t fit here anymore. He is way too slow.

Why in gods green earth would the pens pay to get Florida out of that terrible contract? Jarry is the better and cheaper goalie. Then to add a middle six winger, who even though might be overpaid is still decent and only has one year left.

Probably not, but they have cap space to spare. They don’t have any major contracts to hand out until possibly 2-3 years down the line when Dahlin and Power comes up. But by that time they would get rid of Okposo, Hornqvist, Gudas contracts in this scenario.

I doubt Bob waives for Buffalo, but if it was a 3team trade where Florida gets some scrub AHLer or prospect from the 3rd team in return and then Buffalo retains 3 million more on Bob to a contender they could probably get a 2nd or 3rd for him this year. Also probably do the same for Hornqvist cause I doubt Hornqvist would want to play for Buffalo, but with 50% retained by Buffalo they could probably get a 3rd. Gudas probably gets a 2nd or 3rd. To sum it up, at the very least they’d be getting three 3rds just to retain about 5 million cap. Which isn’t bad.

I didn’t ignore them. They haven’t played a game for the team and possibly never will whether they are here or not. And even if they would, Hallander’s ceiling is a solid bottom 6 and a late first is likely a middle 6 player. Miller is a top line player that is a ppg + player and has positional flexibility. Poolman gives the team another veteran RHD. All for a guy that has played what? Like 80 games in 2.5 seasons with the pens, a prospect who has yet to play a game for the team and whose ceiling is bottom 6, a late 1st rounder that’s no guarantee, and a 2nd pair RHD who may get better but may not. But you stick to your ea logic while the rest of us know you have to give something up to get something.

Carter isn’t getting traded, Kadri gets more than that, Letang would probably take less than that to stay with the pens if they are giving him a 5 year deal, they aren’t going to put an offer sheet on another teams RFA, and that defense is pretty bad, Matheson & Letang proved to be a bad pair together, Cole and Sully don’t like each other so no way he comes back

I’m not mad at all, hence why I’m laughing. You’re the one that seems quite angry. Must be because you have terrible takes 🤷♂️. Also Hallander and the first have yet to play a game for the pens and no guarantee they ever would if they keep those pieces. Interesting take on Pens offseason
Dumo isn’t a cap dump. Why are they paying to get rid of him? Contenders would pay for him and since the pens here have over 7 million in cap space, could get more from a contender by retaining. And no way they should bring Kessel back. He did his thing here but that ran its course.
