Suter and Parise
1st, 2nd and a top prospect for 1 year of forsberg? That is my nightmare.
Trading futures away like crazy is why we’re in this situation with few homegrown players filling holes and having to resort to cheap and or questionable signings...

I don't think Staal would be it maybe Palmieri but Hertl or a similar player would be greatly more impactful and with the division the way it is if you add a guy like Hertl you are pretty much going to the final four. I don't like moving any one of those pieces but we have a fair bit of center prospects not many lw prospects but that's the most populated position when it comes to free agency. I didn't want to give up any of our top dman prospects.</div></div>
I wonder how much the expansion draft comes into the play on a trade. Hertl would have to be protected, opening up one of Dermott or Holl (most likely)
If its a rental like Palmieri thats less to give up in the trade and one less person to protect in expansion... just a thought

Adding a centre/winger like Hertl or Granlund would be ideal. Love the flexibility to move Kerfoot/newly acquired player around the lineup.
However in this trade you've essentially moved 2 1sts, a 2nd and an NHL winger. Hertl is a nice player, but I would be so unwilling to give up that much (regardless of the player)
I am a big believer in constantly adding prospects, so a more attractive package would be a 2021 2nd round pick, and 1 or 2 prospects not named sandin, robertson, Amirov
even better, find a value trade...use a smaller package for a rental like Eric Staal or Palmieri

Leafs Adding A Top 6 Winger At The Deadline
after giving up 2 2nds and a 4th, not sure the team is any better... Albeit a lack of secondary scoring (not lacking recently) this leafs team is deep all over. If there was ever a year to just roll with the team you have, this might be it. Wouldn't be surprised if management knew in season trades would be hard so prepared before the season to ride it out with the roster they have.

LOVE Ekholm, but leafs don't need him right now. However, if we lost a Dman to expansion, maybe this would be a good trade after the expansion draft.

Would much rather get a defensively sound centre and push Kerfoot to top 6 wing
Not ready to move on from Liljegren (hes still 21 and shoots right)
Even with Bennett @ 1.3 cap would be super tight
honestly don't think the leafs should/can add much this year (barring injuries)

Clearly Toronto doesn’t value him that way considering he’s going to be a healthy scratch tonight - Toronto doesn’t have much leverage , he won’t be protected and Seattle would probably take him.</div></div>
Yeah I think they just want a game to evaluate Lehtonen and prefer Dermott on the left side. Leafs also have a lot of lefties which complicates who plays and where. I agree he would be drafted by Seattle if exposed.
My point is Toronto is trying to win the cup this year so why would they trade their current #5 D? and for a poor package? i think they're pretty happy with their depth on D. Only way I could see them trading him is for an NHL forward making less than a million who is better than Spezza/Vesey/Engvall. Pretty tall order...

Sanheim-Dermott
Gustaffson-Braun/Ghost</div></div>
You seem pretty high on Dermott, yet think you can get him for a 3rd and 4th... how does that make sense?

I don't like the Marner contract either, but those 3 looked pretty good last year. If you prefer Nylander play with Matthews (Marner with Tavares) I wouldn't mind that either

1. Min would (should) take that. Unless they don't want to move Dumba thats probably the most you'll get.
2. Leafs should NOT make that trade. Sandin Liljegren and 1sts should not be shopped for a D
- Unless the leafs aquire a legit #1D, they should shop only their middle 6 wingers (Kapanen, Johnsson, Kerfoot) for a solid top 4 Dman

I think getting another 3rd line centre is a good idea. Kerfoot looks way better at LW (and with 91 and 88 lol) and it never hurts to have centre options.
when we're healthy we have a 4th line of Engvall - Spezza - Moore not bad

Wild thought
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LorneyHockey</b></div><div>Anything is possible, but I get the feeling this overvalues the Leafs players a little bit.
I can't see the Flames moving Hamonic for an expiring contract and a top-9 forward. Johnsson may be a little better than Bennett at the moment, and Hamonic is much better than Ceci. I believe the Leafs would need to give up much more here... perhaps prospects/picks.
What do you think about: Hamonic, Bennett for Bracco, Dermott, Ceci + pick.</div></div>
I'd argue Ceci and Hamonic are closer than Johnsson and Bennett. Also both Hamonic and Ceci have expiring contracts so that is a wash.
If im Toronto, I'm not trading for a D with an expiring contract unless its a cheap depth option. We're already going to lose Muzzin, Barrie, and Ceci (most likely)

Columbus Trade Seth Jones for the win
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>"Its worth the price! Adding the key piece to put us into true contention for years to come and paying extra for some cap relief! Thoughts?"
If you truly believe he is difference maker for the next two and half years, yeah the Leafs or any team would want Jones. You know in his seven years in the NHL, he has won one playoff round. So is he truly that "key piece" you write about. Columbus doesn't do that deal. It really just Kapanen and 1st...nothing more for Columbus.</div></div>
McDavid has only won 1 round as well, so i guess they're both not that impactful. Also Jones won a round his first year in Nashville.
But you are right that 4 of the 6 pieces don't carry a lot of value.
