As of now, Arizona is carrying 23.14M worth of such contracts, actually paying out only 15.25M. Three of those contracts vanish this summer. Without those, they could be below the minimum cap hit next year. I am getting my info from an obscure website called capfriendly. You should try it...

From July 2nd, Arizona would have to pay 2M for a 10.5M cap hit; something they're bound to love. But that indeed comes with the 7.5M price tag in 25-26...
One thing is certain, if he's not traded this year, not too long after July 2nd 2025, Price will "finish his career" with another team.

If the Flames' pick is top 10, we'll get Florida's pick (unless it is even better, but that's not happening). Let's assume the deal happens on July 2nd: Arizona has Price massive cap hit for a fraction of the cost in 24-25. A bit more pricy in 25-26, but not a catastrophe.
Montreal gains incredible flexibility and acquire a good middle-six winger. I'd do it... Not sure Arizona would.

Ceiling? Maybe... But what I actually do know is that at 127 careers games, Jonhson has 22G, 37A, 59P. After 127 games, Suzuki had 28G, 54A, 82P.
I also know that 3 years later, he's shown constant progress, is our captain and does it well, and is one pace for a PPG season on a ****ty team. And he is on a contract that looks more and more like a bargain each time he touches the ice. So 1:1 Suzuki against Johnson, I'll say no every day of the week, twice on Sunday.
Then, when you talk of Suzuki, an established first line center, as a throw-in in a transaction for a kid who's still proving himself, I am not sure you've paying much attention to how NHL trades work...

Guntzel is 29 and has good stats... playing with Crosby.
This trade would go against everything the Habs top brass are trying to build.

I'd do it without the retention. Colorado would return Annunen to the minors, so they'd have the cap space.
I understand that the value might not be there for Colorado, but I don't see why we'd take a horrible contract (Johansen), let go of a reliable (and polyvalent) 4C, and burn a retention slot for 2 years for a sole, late 1rst rounder. We have plenty of draft capital as it is.

A late first and a B prospect is worth much less than a 2021 first rounder that isn't a bust and his establishing himself as a decent option down the middle. Habs would need to throw in WIN's first rounder in this trade for it at least to receive some attention from a GM in its right mind. Or you remove Johnston and replace him by Dallas' late first.
Don't get me wrong. I like Savard, and I don't even think we should trade him as he is worth a lot to us in terms of his mentorship. But he's not going to fetch a player of Johnston's caliber.

Monahan while not as valuable as Lindholm would at least get first round pick and someone like a prospect b or a maybe.</div></div>
Monahan might be worth a first, but he does not have half the first-line-center potential that Lindholm has in the eyes of GMs. They see this year as a negative anomaly for him, and a positive anomaly for Monahan. Given that Lambert is at 1ppg in his first full year in the AHL, he's probably worth more than a potentially 28th-to-32nd overall pick, and he'd be closer to contributing in the NHL. One on one against Monahan, I'd prefer this to (e.g.) the Jets first pick and some second tier prospect (we have too many of those already).
In short, I see the above as Monahan<->Lambert, which is decent in light of the Lindholm trade, and then the Jets 1rst for Savard with retention. I don't think WIN would pay that for Savard, even retained.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>EatMyScoobySnack</b></div><div>Monahan along is an first round + so not fair at all for Montreal.</div></div>
I am not a big fan of this trade. That being said, not all first picks are equal. (This analysis provides interesting insights: https://dobberprospects.com/2020/05/16/nhl-draft-pick-probabilities).
A 1rst from (e.g.) Boston or Colorado is potentially worth much less than a first from NYR given the current rankings and the odds of their clinching their respective conference.
And maybe Perreault was a 23rd overall pick, but his value has increased since then. Not sure he'd fall to 23rd if we redid the 2023 draft with today's information.
In short, in the NYR were bold enough to give us Perrault 1:1 against Monahan, I'm pretty sure Hughes would say yes... unless someone else seems even more desperate ;)
In a trade with NYR, I'd be less surprised to see a package built around Kakko then around Perreault.

Pretty sure the Jets' fanbase will strongly disagree with you here. And I am not convinced we can get that much more for Monahan and Savard. The Lindholm deal is good news, be we can't fool ourselves, Monahan won't fetch anywhere close to that kind of return. And Savard... meh. He's worth much more to us that to any contender.

Rangers Push - Zero sum cap hit

Now, remove the retention and add "Calgary's first", I'd consider it. The conditions on CGY's first are such that it is very likely that we're going to receive's Florida's 2025 1rst rounder. In the end, we'd be trading 2 rentals worth at least a 1rst+ together, and an actual late first (Florida's) and a mid-second for Lafrenière. That'd be a pretty decent deal for the Habs. Not sure though that NYR are willing to go that far to get Monahan over (say) Henrique.</div></div>
Given the price just paid by the Canucks for Lindholm, it seems Monahan might be traded 1:1 for Lafrenière in the end ;P

It will depend on whether it's a sellers or buyers market this year, but I agree that unconditionally, Monahan (+given how cheap is his cap hit) is worth a 1rst. That said, Montreal's second (coming back our way here) won't be that far behind Win's first. And we get a second tier prospect. If it's a buyers' market, this could well be one of the most interesting offers on Hugues desk... But I sure hope it'll be a sellers' market ;)

The main problem IMO is the cap retention. Allen is not worth much, and getting rid of both his and Armia's cap would give Hughes amazing flexibility this summer. But using our last retention slot before the draft for such a return makes little sense.

When did I say he was better? I explicitly said: 'compare the built, stats [this year], and leadership", and "as a sign and trade, that'd be a different story maybe". This acknowledge that he's somewhat inferior. But GM have to optimize under constraints, and the cap hit of Monahan makes him a very attractive rental. And people tend to forget that a late first is not worth that much more than an early second round pick...

Compare his built, stats, and leadership to that of Elias Lindholm. Monahan comes at half the price tag... As a rental, I'd say that Monahan is potentially worth more than Lindholm given the year they're having and the cap hit. As a sign and trade, that'd be a different story maybe.
Now nobody would argue that Lindholm is not worth at least a first as a rental.
