What the Leafs Will Look Like in the Summer of 2018

Created by: timetosaygoodbye
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 20, 2017
Published: Nov. 20, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I don't think the Leafs will retain any of their 3 UFA players (JVR, Bozak, or Uncle Leo).

I think Nylander cracks the high 50s or low 60s in points, so a 6-over-7 deal makes sense.

Andreas Johnsson's waiver eligiblity will expire next season (and he's well liked by management from what I've read) so I definitely see him making the team. He's solid defensively and can score, so that should not only make him the ideal Leo Komarov replacement but a good fit for Kadri's line with Connor Brown.

I'm sure most Leafs fans have heard the rumors of a Russian defenceman from the KHL being signed next year just like Zaitsev. Igor Ozhiganov is that player and he is supposed to be a third-pairing RHD who can PK.

The BIG SIGNING is obviously Tavares. Honestly? If he does leave the Islanders (kinda doubtful if I'm being honest) I could see him taking a Hossa one-year deal to see if the Leafs would be an ideal fit.

Apparently the NHL revenue is way up this year so the cap could rise to between 80-82 million.

The Leafs are going to have a TON of space to sign Tavares if he chooses to come. Especially if it's a one year "let's try it out and see if it works" deal.

And with Bozak becoming a UFA? it's perfect timing.

It's wishful thinking for sure but I hope it happens.

Dermott should be NHL ready next season, which will leave Borgman as an extra when the Leafs sign Ozhiganov. But I think they'll send Borgman down to the Marlies to get playing time and have Carrick as the extra.

I think Sparks will be the Leafs backup. Hell, he might take the job before this upcoming new year.

Why would Tavares sign a 1 year deal?? If he does make free agency, he's going somewhere long-term. Sure Toronto has a great future and likely cup contenders (where Tavares will want to go) but it makes no sense. As much as leaf fans want to see this happen, it won't. Toronto will be spending plenty of money signing their young guys long-term, not Tavares.

"I could see him taking a Hossa one-year deal to see if the Leafs would be an ideal fit." seems like a big financial risk to sign just a one year contract. or is tavares such a dummy that he has to sign one year deals with teams to see if he's fit.
