Hamonic do-over - Goes to TOR. Wow check this out...

Created by: joshelkin
Team: 2017-18 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 3, 2017
Published: Sep. 3, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I believe the reason the Isles backed off this trade was due to the fact that JVR would not sign an extension with NYI. Let's hypothetically say he would. How different would the Isles look?
Trades
1.
CGY
  1. 2018 1st round pick (CGY)
  2. 2018 2nd round pick (CGY)
  3. 2019 2nd round pick (CGY)
2.
NYI
  1. Liljegren, Timothy
  2. van Riemsdyk, James
Additional Details:
2016 16th overall pick was rumored to be the other piece of this package
3.
NYI
  1. Duchene, Matt ($3,000,000 retained)
COL
  1. Dal Colle, Michael
  2. Kulemin, Nikolai
  3. Liljegren, Timothy
  4. 2018 1st round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Sakic gets his young, blue chip D-man after all. NYI keeps Pulock, everyone's happy.

Would also need COL to take back Kulemin (who is on an expiring contract) to make this work.

If the Islanders got JVR, there is no reason to bring in Duchene as well. It just means sacrificing a potential top pairing D in Liljegren for someone you don't have a need for. Nelson is a fine 2C, and Barzal will grow into the role at 3C and take Nelson's spot in a year or two. Bringing in Duchene makes no sense for the Isles if they were to have JVR as well as Liljegren needing to be given up

I completely disagree. Clearly you aren't a fan by the picture, but you don't realize how bad our 2C position is. There is not a legit FO winner on this roster. Duchene brings that WITH scoring touch. No such thing as an overly talented roster. Isles already have depth on the back end in terms of prospects in Pulock, Toews and Wotherspoon.

You also have to look at the salary outlook for this team. If JVR agrees to an extension, it probably costs a little north of $6 million. If Tavares stays, there's at least another 6 million against the cap. Pulock and Nelson also need new deals. The next season, Lee, Ho-Sang, Beauviller need raises, and Duchene either walks or costs even more against the cap. There is no point in going for it right now, because the Isles aren't in a position to win now. Division is too crowded, and they have no legitimate #1 goalie that can carry them deep into the playoffs. Why give up all that for Duchene if it doesn't do you any good now, and it forces at least one quality player to leave? It just spells more years of mediocrity for the Isles

$29M is coming off the books next season (not including whatever the cap goes up by)

JT: 11x8
JVR: 5x5
De Haan: 4.5x6
Pulock: 2.5x4
Nelson: 3.5x3

Leaves just shy of $3M plus the cap increase. Toews and Soderstrom will make the jump next season. You'd realistically only have to move one contract if Garth needed increased flexibility (Cizikas? is probably the most attractive vs Ladd/Clutterbuck).

Leafs turned down the deal because they weren't will to trade the 16th overall pick.

I may have misspoke. It was a 2018 1st plus JVR. But this happened before the draft. No way TOR would have assumed Liljegren would be there at 16. http://www.newsday.com/sports/hockey/islanders/travis-hamonic-traded-to-calgary-for-draft-picks-1.13761218

I just can't see the Leafs will to trade the 16th overall for Hamonic, especially when it ended up with to get a player in a position of need Lijegren. But the deal as you proposed.....the Avs should jump at that deal.
Three prospects for two years of Duchene (who may not be THAT good).
