Not really a surprise. Easiest team for him to climb the ladder.

Funny thing is, the devils have been one of the smartest teams the last couple years. Addig Hall, Palmieri, Johansson, Hischier, Mueller, Zacha, Speers, Boyle, now Butcher. Yet, I still wonder how long it will be until they're a playoff threat.

2 Years but tough division. Every team will be competitive except the Islanders.

Not sure how a team is "smart" for winning the lottery. Not smart to draft Paval Zacha when you passed on Ivan Provorov, Zach Werenski, etc.

Zacha still has potential. While those two defenseman have elite potential, Zacha isn't necessarily a bad pick because he hasn't had his big break out yet. Was it the best pick? As of right now, no. But it's not like the Devils aren't smart for taking him. He'll get his opportunities, especially this season with Zajac's injury. It's way too early to say that it wasn't smart to take him, because nobody knows what he's going to become.

As of now, it looks like they should've taken Provorov or Werenski, especially considering how weak their blue line is. In the future? Who knows. But their defensive prospect cupboard is pretty bare as of now. They really could've used a number one guy like Provorov or Werenski.

you know its a bad pick when im watching the draft at a bar and people (flyers fans) cheered when the Devils drafted him because we knew we got Provy. Does he have potential to be impactful - i guess. Would you take him over Provorov/Werenski - I'd hope not.
