Description

So Davidson went out and signed probably 2 more guys than was necessary. One of Martinez and Brodie and one of Smith and Maroon. Personally like Martinez and Maroon better overall.

So he oversigns players to come in and "teach the young kids" but effectively left zero room on the roster for the young kids. It's a bit of a head scratcher for me.

Personally, he nailed the Bertuzzi, Turbo, and Brossoit signings. The Maroon, Martinez, and Smith signings are 1 year so effectively they're depth and injury replacements (because injuries will happen). But the Brodie signing...woof. Especially for 2 years? So are EDM, Allan, and Levshunov not on the team next year? Because you now have 5 D signed for next season. Murphy's value is higher on the Hawks than trade market. Brodie had a down year last year. I don't get it.

At least he found some serviceable NHL stop gaps until next year when Martinez, Smith, and Maroon are off the team and he can truly plug in the youth.

I'm fine w/ not just "handing" Nazar, Slaggert or any of the young D a roster spot this season. Let them earn it in training camp. Hawks can waive Smith and Anderson and Maroon can sit most nights if Nazar and Slaggert earn spots. I hate the Brodie signing too. Awful. He can sit as the 7th D if the Hawks want to use Kaiser or EDM this season. And if Lev and Allen show enough progress this season in Rockford, just buy out Brodie next June. But I feel Lev will benefit most from two seasons in Rockford.

The only thing I can think of is that KD is fine with putting guys on waivers to start the season and isn't worried about losing anyone for nothing. And maybe guys like Maroon and Smith, so late in their careers, are ok with that too.

Personally, I think that could be a HUGE mistake when it comes to certain players, like Reichel and Anderson, but KD gonna do what KD gonna do. Also, we need at least one more center, preferably for the 2nd line. I think KD should be on the phone with OTT about Pinto, and FLA about Lundell.
