Description
Honest question. Wondering if Tavares was traded for buyout after bonus paid makes sense and is allowed. May take more to do it

Trade after bonus. Actual money less than 1million. Tavares bought out

    Additional Details:
Just wondering if trade for buyout. And then leafs resign. Not sure if any of bonuses would need to be paid back but don't think so. This way Tavares only loses out on a few hundred k but gets to sign bigger contract earlier. More money for him

Cheers. Thought if sharks were the ones to buy him out it would be different as he'd be a free agent. Thought it was too easy

The NHL has thought of that lol or else youd see so many guys being bought out and resigning for cheap would destroy the games competitivness.

Caps did this years ago with Brooks Orpik.

After they won the Cup IIRC.

    Traded him to Colorado.

Avs bought him out and then Caps re-signed him cheap.

NHL allowed it but then later put a rule in saying it's illegal.

Hence why it's often referred to as "The Brooks Orpik rule."

That's all true but... Brooks was an unsigned UFA after the buyout for 4 weeks with no other team interested, so than the Caps resigned him.

It wasn't a wink wink cheating conspiracy move.

gees...looking at his career, he was a +17 in the Cup run but was a -9 during the regular season that year.

    Sure it wasn't.

NHL just instituted a new rule for no reason. 🙄

    I'm glad we agree.

    I'm right.
