Trying to assess market price for McGroarty

Description
Murat Ates in The Athletic today: “There are differing opinions about McGroarty’s value. He was taken 14th in 2022, which implies a similar value here and now — hence the Wild’s No. 13 pick being in play. There is an argument to be made that McGroarty’s development at Michigan, including his World Junior gold medal, should increase his stature — he’s developed for two years and covered the bet Winnipeg made when it reached for him two years ago. However, there has been some talk that teams see the Jets as painted into a corner and were more inclined to value McGroarty as a late first-round pick.”

Chris Peters said yesterday the buzz was that they could not get a pick higher than where he was drafted (#14).

Based on some of the rumored trades, it appears the market for him is around pick #20 to pick #25 in draft value.

And if they are going to use the asset to address defense, they could find an equal valued piece on day two.

What do you think?

One rumor had Minnesota trading down with Winnipeg from #13 to #37 for McGroarty if their draft board thinned out. But Buium fell and Wild got a great player.

According to PuckPedia, the net of #13 (28.14) for #37 (8.32) is around #19 pick (19.81). Since Wild declined, one could assume #19 pick to be McGroarty ceiling.

Another rumor had Boston offering #25 pick for McGroarty, which Winnipeg had declined. So one could assume it would take more than #25.

There was some talk about NYI bidding for McGroarty too. Perhaps it was #20 pick.

Seems like Minnesota and Montreal were the two teams with the most interrest on him.

Even that Minny was ready to give their 2024 1st round pick for him.

I'm glad the Wild stood pat and ended up with a nice player.

I do think they could still offer next years #1 (Protected top 12) for McGoerty

I suppose a team would want a "signed " McCroatry before making the trade. As good as McCroatry might be, he's a LWer which is the "easiest" position to fill.
McCroatry might already told other teams that he would be willing to sign as a UFA. in a year ....so maybe those. teams aren't going to be offering the Jets as much.
The Isles offering the 20th pick, might have the most logical since the Isles did draft a winger.

I didn’t see the Montreal link…any idea what was offered? #21? Would be consistent with my hypothesis that the market was pricing him around #20-25.

Still think it’s a multi piece blockbuster, so values and what got what and what the return is, all on ones opinion. Jets probably buying a short termed backup, but still in the market for rhd dman with term to go with recently signed demelo as top 4 rhd dman. Also a 2c prospect/project or immediate help depending on monahan term or signature. Ehlers so close to ufa and pionk losing favour would probably be the fellows shipped out. So a winger with some control to replace ehlers would be needed also. So mcgroarty/ehlers/pionk for a 4/5 piece package to make Chevy look like he won is my guess.

              Makes sense.

I don’t think there is a ton of signing risk here. He has a very good reputation as high character guy and is likely being honest about wanting to play. (I still believe he will be future NHL captain someday).

              Also, he plays center too.

Kinda feel sorry for the Jets. Winnipeg isn't really a desirable place to be. Location is the issue. It's an isolated city...poor weather, and might have the worse travel schedule. And for Americans, there aren't many (if any) direct flights to Winnipeg for family to visti.
In my business life, I know people who turned down promotions because it meant relocating to Winnipeg

Could see something similar to that Kane/bogosian for Myers/lemieux/forget the rest lol. Probably take sometime after a few teams don’t find the ufas they want and need some new blood energy.

Ya not sure the ownership group has truly wrapped there head around this, or combatting it with loyalty contracts, little too much cap and too much term, try to keep the fanbase entertained with career nights over, a rollercoaster of movement and keep attempting to win the last game of the year. Fanbase needs to dream up a perfect storm to find another Cinderellaish run. If I was in charge, would look to a tb rays or Oakland A’s of baseball and trade back into some youth movements, and restack the deck every so often. Kind of like an extended junior system, have the team built up for 7/10 year cycles then tear it all down again and redo it again through the draft.
