Marner Bedard Combo

Created by: mh61
Team: 2024-25 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 28, 2024
Published: Jun. 28, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Leafs fans seem adamant that Marner must go so why not take your best shot at him. Chicago has the pieces to make a deal and the opportunity to play with Bedard and be part of what could be a powerhouse in the next few years might be enough to get Marner to waive his NMC.

After this deal Hawks still have a ton of cap space and no major spends for 2 seasons until Bedard is up for a new contract so why not get paid to take on the next 3 years of Campbell's contract to reach the cap floor. This will also help them recoup assets moved in the Marner trade. Best case here the hawks can rehab Campbells image like they did with Mrazek and potentially move him in the 3rd year. Worst case they bury him in the minors for 2 years and buy out the final year in which case the buyout would be roughly 1M for 2 years which isn't much. Either way the oilers can avoid a 1.5M buyout penalty for the next 6 years so trading him is preferable with their cap situation with a 2M Neal buyout still on the books

Zero percent chance CHI does that.

Woaf! $12M. People in TOR are crazy. Just because TOR overpaid for Nylander doesn't mean Marner needs to be overpaid too.

Marner is going to Utah along with Ekblad. The front office over there want to make some huge splashes and I think Marner and Ekblad do that for them.

I was just looking at Paul Kariya's stats earlier for fun and realized that he had very similar production in the years leading up to him hitting the same age as Marner is right now, and then he started to decline and never hit 100 points again. Now, they are different players and this is a different time, but I have a feeling that any team who gives Marner the money he is projected to get, is going to regret it. It's going to become a problem and he will become a pariah. I REALLY don't want CHI to be the team that gives ANY of the upcoming UFA's the money they are commanding, unless it's McDavid, maybe, but even that could become an issue.

In the world of a flat cap that we have been living in since covid yes it would be an overpay but as the cap goes up (4.5M this year and the NHL predicting another 5M increase next year) the value of all deals will increase. McDavid will set the top end in 2 years when he comes up for a new deal and if the cap sits around 95-98M at that time he will likely get around 15-18M/season at which point most top players will be making 10-12M which would mean this marner contact would be around league average for a player of his caliber.

I do agree with you on the flat cap vs increasing cap situations. I just can't get past that Pasta signed for $11.25M 1 year ago and now Leafs wingers are $11.5M and plus. Pasta is easily the best player of the 3.
