Cap Floor Potential

Description
Hawks have a ton of picks and a ton of Cap Space but are still a few years away from really competing. The best way forward would be to make your picks and build from within instead of taking the huge amount of cap space and signing UFAs who will be mid 30s and slowing down by the time they are ready to compete which is when you would see contract regret from this year.

Keeping this in mind I would say the Hawks should let their young guys play, gain experience, and grow instead of bringing in older UFAs to take the Ice-time. So what do they do with their 33M in cap space? Maybe take on a bad contact and get paid to do it?

In this Trade the Hawks take Jake Campbells Contract from the Oilers and for their trouble they receive Xavier Bourgault (oilers top Prospect) and the RFA rights to Dylan Holloway (who showed in playoffs that he still has a very good upside) in return the Blackhawks send Soderblom (middle of the road backup goalie) and the Rights to Taylor Raddysh (who is a McDavid Teammate from Junior and not a 100% re-sign for the Hawks anyway). Even after taking on the Campbell Contract and taking care of inhouse contracts the Hawks will still have 22M in cap space.

What does this do for the Hawks future? The Frozen Cap Era is over, the Salary Cap will be growing for the for-seeable future. After the 2024-25 season the Blackhawks get an additional 3.6M in Cap Space back (McCabe Retain and Bailey Buyout). Bedard, Korshinski, Nazar, Del Mastro and Reichel the 5 Hawks players who are likely to get larger second contracts are still under contract for 2 years. Campbells deal expires in 3 years. Because of this the Hawks could just bury campbell for at least 2 years and depending how the cap is looking then could buy out the last year of his contract then which would be a small cap penalty. Lets also remember how the Blackhawks organization has rehabbed Mrazek's name, who is to say they couldn't do the same for Campbell. To me this deal almost makes too much sense and I am sure Edmonton would love to get out of the Campbell Contract without having to lose 1.5M in Cap Space for the Next 6 Years.

Oilers are not giving away Holloway for a cap dump. Terrible. He's proved he can play at the NHL level and we need him to play because of our cap issues.

what if moving him removes your cap issue? Like in this deal moving him gets the oilers 5M in cap space?

Oilers are just going to buy him out. A team would have to offer something that is better than the oilers buying him out. Saving a few mill is not worth giving up Holloway because we'd have to fill up his roster spot anyways. Handshake deal to lend us Bedard for a season or two then sure XD.

- also you gave EDM contracts back and the point of this deal would be to save cap no? why give contracts to EDM?

That’s a terrible deal for the Hawks. If the Oilers top prospect is really a winger playing at less than a 30 PPG pace in the AHL, then we’d take Edmonton’s 1st round picks in 2025 and 2026 to take on Campbell. Neither Bourgault nor Holloway would be among the Hawks top 5 prospects.

I'm good with the trade if the Oilers do it....However I think the Hawks would have to sweeten the deal with a 2nd or 3rd...
Where I'm afraid I have to disagree is that the Hawks should "just" let the kids play and gain experience....yes that is true for some.....but unless you want to continue to draft in the top 5 for the next 3 years it's a bad idea....The Hawks have a small window, to overpay with shorter terms for quality players to help them get into the playoffs. What we don't want is expensive young players who all need contracts around the same time and who have no playoff experience. The Hawks have an opportunity here to do something special...and they should do it. They need to trade for almost NHL-ready players, like McGroarty from Winnipeg, and sign or trade for quality players to play with Bedard. I don't love their prospect pool outside of their defenseman to be honest - I'm not sure the Hawks have any top 2-line guys....I think Nazer is a solid 3rd line winger and the Hawks are stuffed on left defense but have almost nothing on the right side.

I don’t like that trade for the Hawks, Yzerman just trade a 2nd to get rid of Walman who had 2 x $3.4m remaining. With Campbell having 3 x $5m remaining I think it clearly confirms Edmonton will need to pay a 1st round pick +.

I can’t see Edmonton giving up Holloway, as much as I would like them to and Bourgault regressed this season.

So… I have proposed this before and it still seems appropriate to me Campbell, Edmonton’s 2025 1st round pick and Beau Akey go to the Hawks for FC.

As for running with a bunch of young kids who may not be ready for the NHL, I think that’s been proven to be a good way to ruin young prospects… Kirby Dach says hello.

That is an awful idea.
