Kings 25 if Byfield is extended long term

Created by: Imraygbiv
Team: 2024-25 Los Angeles Kings
Initial Creation Date: May 29, 2024
Published: May 29, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Makes next season difficult to maneuver due to being so tight to the cap ceiling, but it is what it is. Have to go with somewhat cheap goaltending, and some value additions to the lineup. But might be the play for longer-term freedom with cap increasing, and Kopi and Drew's contracts ending in the next few seasons.

Not far off from what I think will happen, but some small nitpick stuff.

Kaliyev is gone for futures.

LA will definitely get a budget winger with experience with one of our centers: Blake Wheeler or Thomas Tatar have experience with PLD and Danault respectively. The 4th line will need someone like Lewis if they decide to go without Lizzotte.

Kylington is an offensive d-man, Clarke will need a true shutdown paired with him to succeed.

Overall I have a sneaking suspicion Byfield is bridge contracted, so Blake can get another top-6 winger in like Toffoli and some left over cash for a minor upgrade in goal.

Is Byfield's bridge gonna cost 2 mill because Toffoli wants the Killorn contract.

Byfield will take something like 4-5, Killorn is lucky he got his contract and helped Anaheim reach a cap floor. Toffoli is done being a journeyman, he needs a place where him and his wife like, LA will get a discount on his asking price but will need to sign him for 5 years and it's a team they know and location they are comfortable with. I think Toffoli would take $4Mx5 with a full NMC just to stop moving around.

If Toffoli was willing to sign for 4 mill AAV he would not have left NJD.

Again, it has been reported that he is seeking the Killorn contract. And he will likely get trade protections regardless, virtually every single UFA signing does, it’s not something he’ll need to sacrifice like 10 million dollars to get.

Byfield might get 4-5 on a 1 year deal.

Agreed about Kaliyev, but the cheap UFA winger in the bottom 6 will likely cost ~1M so I just left it since the numbers roughly cancel out. Would like to see them figure out how to utilize the Kaliyev/****emo type young players at some point..

D pairings can be changed around. Can put one of Gavy or Mikey with Clarke. Can try giving Spence someone with more mobility like Kylington. Someone that can actually keep up with the play. Getting tired of signing "shutdown" Dmen who are just synonymous with pylons, cuz Blake hasnt been able to ID a good one for a while.

As long as we are unwilling to spend on better goaltending we need shutdown defensemen. We have been really fortunate signing or obtaining budget deals on Edler, Maata, Englund. But LA needs this generations Mitchell or Scuds to really go the distance in the playoffs.

I think our last chance to turn Kaliyev into a reclamation project was when they reupped Hiller, if he can somehow work in the new system, it's possible he stays. But I'd rather bet on connections we know have worked like PLD and Wheeler or Danault and Tatar. Really going to need Thomas, Turcotte, Spence, and Clarke to take the next step if LA wants to compete next season.

Arent you scared that looking for a bridge deal for Byfield might result in exposing him to potential OS?

Overall I think this is pretty realistic.
I think Blake likes to bridge Byfield for 2 or even 3 years. Actually it can benefit both sides, when after the next 2 seasons Kopis retirement will leave a big chunk of cap space to work with. #
I like PLD in the 1st line actually, but I think he should play with our top scorer Kempe on RW and Fiala on LW.
2nd line with QB on LW, Kopi at C and the Kings should sign Toffoli to play the RW on the 2nd line. As mentioned by my friend @tryger if Toffoli gets the 5 years, we might be able to sign him in the region of 4-4.5M AAv. After 3 years or actually only half of that of Arviddson, whom I always liked, the Kings need a reliable, healthy, right handed goalscorer. The Kings show interest in him and I would be surprised if they miss out on this very good chance.
I also like the option of bringing in Nedeljkovic.

Not particularly. Anything under 9M AAV and the Kings will match easily. We have the cap space to fill out our roster, but giving Byfield the long term deal just makes it hard to adjust the roster this season only. So we'd have to run it back without Roy and Arvidsson, fill the forward holes with AHL young players (Turcotte, Akil, Sammy, etc) and sign a cheap goalie under 3M.
