Sabres with Marner

Created by: thewookie1
Team: 2024-25 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: May 7, 2024
Published: May 7, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
While not exactly likely; I could theoretically see a scenario in which this played out.
Trades
BUF
  1. Marner, Mitchell
Additional Details:
Marner weaponizes his NMC and tries to keep himself in Toronto by vetoing multiple trades. Eventually accepts the Buffalo trade due to proximity and the Sabres not intending to re-sign him. (Plus a desire for revenge)
TOR
  1. Skinner, Jeff
Additional Details:
Skinner would waive his NMC for Toronto and would allow Trevling to save some face by getting a 60 to 70pt winger back.

How on earth does this make sense, we want to trade marner because he doesn't perform in the playoffs, so you want us to do it for a for a guy whos never played in the playoffs, and much older, with arguably a top 5 worse contract in the league??

Come on man lmao

Maybe in your fantasy he waives for Buffalo, but in reality there's less than 10% chance of that

In what world would Toronto do this? The argument for trading Marner is to get cap space, and you barely even get that by acquiring Skinner. You just get an older, worse player for no particular reason.

I’m just saying that the odds of Toronto finding a taker for Marner at 10.9mil without a lot of money going back is unlikely. If Marner wants to go to another playoff team, they’ll have to eat cap through either retention or players. Additionally, if the team can’t sign him then his value isn’t going to be anywhere near as high for a majority of teams. With that is the full NMC which will likely further hurt Toronto’s return.

He’s a great player but he holds all the cards
