What is this buyout of PLD nonsense? I realize there was an Athletic article, but there is a lot of stupid stuff in the Athletic.

its a lot cheaper to buy him out this season and the cost isn't even that much relative to how much they would have to pay if they decide to buy him out lets say in a year or two as no one would be wiling to trade for him unless it comes with a solid retention which would cost the Kings more over the long run.

It’s a significant amount of cap hit over a long period of time. They need to play him at wing instead of force feeding him to be a center. Its a bad contract, but his level of overpay is not worth cutting him

Long time yes, significant cap, not so much.

He’d be on the books for 14 years. 😱

1.6
1.5
2.5
3.7
3.8
3.8
2.8

Final 7 years all 1.1

Painful.

Not as painful as having him for 8.5 for next 7 years. With an NMC.

He’s a loser.

If they buy him out before his June birthday, it costs a lot less (1/3 buyout vs 2/3 buyout).

It would be pure stupidity to cut him.

Fans want to make him out to be terrible, but he is just overpaid by about 2.5m. He’s basically the equivalent of Dawson Mercer from a production standpoint until Mercer takes his step up

The Kings won’t even consider it even though it was a terrible deal

I am not advocating one way or the other…just saying why the buyout is being discussed. He turns 26 on June 24th. So there could be a narrow window between when buyout period opens (48 hours after cup finals end) and his birthday. Once he turns 26, it will be 2/3 buyout

Before June 24: 1/3 of salary plus full bonus over twice remaining term (14 years)

After June 24: 2/3 of salary plus full bonus over twice remaining term (14 years)
