I think whoever would have got the best offer

It may have actually been Willy who was gone as 6.9m is more appealing on top of no trade protection till July 1 so it didnt limit the teams lul

Dubas would keep the Core 5 together till they all retired.

I dont think so

When you listen to his final press conference he was not quick to defend them nor did he say he was not gonna move them

All options were on the table were his words

The Leafs have always played "regular season" style hockey and that's why they fail in the playoffs.

Marner is perfect example of this.

Leafs are this generation version of Ovie and the Caps before they finally won a Cup.

Both gave interviews saying they were close to signing (Schenn said it was pretty much a done deal and most reports at the time back that up) before Dubas was fired and afterwards both had one chat with Shanny and decided to leave.

Eerily similar stories about good conversations with Dubas, single chat with Shanny and they were done.
