If we let Melander walk instead of resign

Created by: hockeynutter
Team: 2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 26, 2024
Published: Apr. 26, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The points of this exercise was if we let Nylander walk which fans believes we should have and he would be easy to replace. This exercise is to prove to sign a player that has consistently scored less than Nylander but yes still very good player and point per game. Whether our forward group is better of not, to sign a capable player of replacing would have taken up 90% to what Nylander signed maybe more because we now have to compete with other teams and what they offer.

a lot of people are gonna be very surprised when Reinhart doesnt shoot nearly double his career % and is a 30ish goal scorer for the next few years

And signed another overpaid absurd contract?

You'd probably be in the exact same position lol.

Thats the point. If we let Nylander walk and look to sign a comparable player to replace, we still have to overpay said player. Find me a free agent that that produce 65-90 points guaranteed next year that will sign with us for about 5-6 million.

Oddly, other teams seem to make it work...

Well you and won't be surprised. Who doesn't like Reinhart but to pay him off his this seasons production to a long term seems so unwise.

I thought signing Nylander to eight years was unwise....even 11.5m was iffy. Seems like Trevling continued his tradition and Leafs GM tradition of paying "hometown premium"

Some fans seem to miss the concept of the cap and free agency. For instance instead of paying Nylander 11.5m and then only the cap to a Dman 1.5m.....that's a 13m
It might just better to sign a 6m winger and a 7m Dman.
Always strange to me, that so many fans are so afraid of not resigning their own UFAs.

Not even free agency... Scouting. Where did Florida get some of their major contributors?

Forsling? Waivers
Montour? Third round pick.
Bennett? Second round pick.

Meanwhile Toronto doesn't want to retain players like Hyman and Kadri so they can keep overpaying their core 4 forwards and they keep throwing away picks for rentals.

If they hadn't sold most of their 1sts and 2nds for rentals they might have more talents like Knies. ****, if they hadn't had to throw away a 1st to dump Marleau to keep overpaying their core four, they could have Seth Jarvis.

Leafs under Lou and especailly Dubas, traded away so many top picks all for what....one playoff round win.
The Leafs have just four players on their roster drafted past the first round...Knies, Woll and Holmberg, Robertson. That has caused the Leafs scrambling to sign past their best due dates, aging UFAs every summer
