Nuge Explained

Created by: TySmith4Norris
Team: 2017-18 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 23, 2017
Published: Jul. 23, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Trade:
Pittsburgh gets a young, cost-controlled 3C with huge upside and the speed/smarts to flourish under Sullivan. They lose a first round pick in a deep draft, a #1 RW that has lost his position on the team (with Sheary next to Crosby), and a very capable fourth liner who does not quite fit in their system.

Edmonton frees up cap for Draisaitl/McDavid when the cap crunch hits in 18-19, get a #1 RW to play with McDavid and a solid fourth liner, both of whom have Stanley Cup experience for the young team. They lose a former #1 overall who has not worked out for them or fit into Chiarelli's mold of larger, grittier players. RN-H's production is immediately replaced by Hornqvist, and they have the option to resign him or let him walk after the season, giving them some cap flexibility moving forward.

Signings:
Dumoulin at 3.75M x 5 makes sense for him and the team moving forward. Look at the Russell contract if you think that is too much for a player that does not produce offensively.
Sheary's number is more than likely determined by arbitration, and Arvidsson's contract affects the value.

Lines:
Sid and the kids is worth the price of admission
Rust-Malkin-Kessel has worked before
Hagelin-RNH-Sprong pairs two of the best two-way forwards on the team with Sprong to cover for any rookie errors defensively
Wilson-Rowney-Reaves punishes other teams on the forecheck, protects the other three scoring lines
Archibald as 13th man, ZAR as first call up (likely takes over Rowney's position mid-season)

Dumoulin-Letang is a 20+ minute pairing
Maata-Schultz helps Maata regain form
Cole-Hunwick as a solid 3rd line, shutdown pairing
Pouliot and Ruh get cycled in to see if either is ready to replace Cole moving forward

I see Strome as Nuge's replacement for them.

One of the best and fair trades for RNH that I've seen.

Nice job.
