DeBrusk is 27 and from Edmonton so it doesn't have to be a rental

Avs decline; they can't afford to re-sign Tanev so they aren't trading a 1st for a rental and a cap dump.

Even if Hanfin is coming with an extension, I'm still not sure I'd do that if I was Boston

Was surprised to here COL mentioned by Friedman as one of the teams interested in Tanev. Now, most of Friedman's stuff is useless hearsay, but at least it is often in the realm of possibility that matches team need to suitable player. Forget about whether they could re-sign Tanev or what the potential trade cost might be. I simply have no idea why COL would even be mentioned as interested. It would make no sense.

They move him to another team for a centre? Only reason I can see they do that

Take out the 1st

Tom Fitzgerald offered the 1st so I think it is very much in play. The issue was salary retention which is why Vanecek was added here.

2 weeks and 1 day until Calgary fans are either disappointed or coming to terms with what the real return should be for players.

2 weeks and 1 day until Boston fans turn their focus to the playoffs and then what they can get with their cap room next year.

2 weeks and 1 day until teams that secure rentals worry about their capability to resign them.

Where did you see that?
Everything I saw said Fitzy offered Holtz for Markstrom with some retention.

Boston likely doesn’t make an offer and waits. If they are worried about Hanifin signing an extension, I could see them offering a Grz, a 2025 first, a 2026 second, and maybe a prospect like Georgii Merkulov or John Farinacci for Hanifin with retention to Grz’s salary. Basically the caliber of AHL player offsets the delay in pick.

This deal values DeBrusk as a cap dump (he isn’t) and Lohrei as a second rounder. After going around and around with Calgary on 4 defenseman, I’m pretty comfortable it’s a waste of time discussing Lohrei’s relative value with them at this point, will revisit if he’s included in a deal with Hanifin when it isn’t about winning an argument and it’s about discussing the merits of the player.

They can sign him in the summer for free. If he hasn't already extended, he's a rental.

I mean the Avs might consider adding a RHD for depth but can't see them being interested in Tanev to play 3RD. Very much overkill to give up a 1st for and lose a C for even with RyJo not having been the best fit.

I thought that was said on the episode of 32 Thoughts right after Markstrom to NJ didn't happen. I shouldn't say Fitz offered it since I am not in the room with any of these guys, but that's what I thought the offer was. Not familiar with Devils prospects to know if they have other 1st prospect equivalents (obviously not Nemec, Hughes) but I would think Markstrom would demand more than a 1st (pick or Holtz) and closer to a 1st + 1st value. Devils may still not make the trade but this would be considering NJ thinks if they get a goalie they could make a playoff push and the Flames have a shot at the wildcard in the west even after they trade away all their top players but if they trade Markstrom they would have no shot. Given that I think they would value Markstrom more than Anaheim values Gibson for example which would lead NJ to "overpay" on Markstrom value.

I am just going by what was reported: Holtz for Markstrom...with retention and cost of retention unknown.
That part seemed to be picked up in a couple of places.

From NJD perspective, it was notable to see Holtz included (even hard to believe at first).
We have been asked often about him, and it always seems to be stories of GMs asking for Holtz and Fitzy saying, no way.

Our other young players/prospects are the top guys that are not trade options (Nemec, Luke, Mercer).
After Holtz, the best two are Seamus Casey (RHD in NCAA) and Arseni Gritsyuk (LW in KHL)
After that, its probably Topias Vilen (LHD in AHL), Graeme Clarke (RW in AHL), Leeni Hameenaho (RW in Liiga).

It appears most of the talk has moved to Saros now.
Brunnete was Asst coach here last year...so he knows our guys.
He liked Holtz a lot...and spent a lot of time working with him one-on-one.
