I think if his arbitration case goes over 5 millions the Red Wings will walk away from the contract because they have no cap space. So why not wait and see!! Get him as a UFA instead

A restricted free agent who does not sign a new contract by December 1st becomes ineligible to play for the rest of the season. So a trade is needed to get Tatar no matter what

He filed for arbitration so if it's more than 3.5 millions$ the team can walk away. Same thing happened with Antti Niemi after winning the cup with Chicago (back then the number to walk away was less) they walked away after Niemi was awarded more than 2.5 millions. Niemi became UFA he ended up signing with the Sharks for 2 millions.
