Keep Savard trade Matheson

Created by: Blazingbat11
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 31, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Savard serves a better purpose for the Habs young dman than Matheson. And you can get better value for Matheson in a trade. Habs also have so much depth at LD that they can afford to lose Matheson.

And I’m a Hutson believer, as soon as Hutson arrives, just give him the keys to the PP. They can shelter him at 5v5 to start by playing Guhle, Struble, and even Xhekaj ahead of him. But the PP is Hutson’s, full stop.

While Matheson is a stud and I’t’d hurt to trade him, I agree with your proposed value. I think a team like Dallas is a nice fit.

The hurt would be short lived imo. Plenty of guys can take Matheson’s spot (Guhle, Harris, Xhekaj) until Hutson arrives. Doubt he gets moved before the trade deadline, would most likely happen in the offseason.

But the main point is Savard, even next year, serves a better purpose to insulate the young dmen. Would rather keep him as the veteran presence. And with the logjam at LD, Matheson makes the most sense of all guys the Habs could realistically move that has solid value. Don’t see Guhle, Struble, or Xhekaj being available. And Harris probably isn’t worth that much.

A month ago I would of said hell no…but with the emergence of Struble this may not be the worst idea.

Then again do we really trade a veteran newly appointed alternate captain 2 years in a row?

I also think if teams would be willing to pay a high price for a dman. Matheson would be the more likely target.
It would definitely be a bold move from Hughes to trade Matheson lol I would be really impressed if he pulls the trigger.

Maybe whoever replaces Matheson on the power play will start passing the puck to Slaf lol….. *ducks for cover*

Slaf does get the puck on the PP, problem is he never shoots it. Idk if that’s a play set up problem(no one will argue that our PP is terrible) or a lack of confidence issue but let ‘er rip bud.

This HAD to be addressed. Struble has no right to be playing like a 3-year veteran at this point. What a pleasant surprise he has been.

I wonder if Philly might be interested?
They have the league's worst PP% and he could help with that.
I know they weren't projected to be buyers, but they are in the hunt. They also have extra picks and can keep their own by moving Florida's 1st and Columbus' 2nd.
Montreal can take Petersen and buy him out in the process to get rid of some dead cap.

I don't see any value in Frost. Not good enough for top 6 and not defensive enough for bottom 6.
I'd take Foerster if I thought they'd do it, nothing else much interests me personally.
