Why does Matt Roy take a 50% pay cut this offseason?

Now imagine what they could do if they also didn't extend Foligno, Hartman and Zuccarello?

Hartman contract I actually think is good and the others might end up being fine or tolerable but before they did all that they actually had some decent space available to make a big move this season even with the buyout hits and they decided to double down on the existing team.

The Zuccarello extension is by far the least detrimental. It's the shortest term and he's still pretty nasty.

Hartman is fine, but wasn't necessary. Foligno is downright bad.

They should've waited for the 2022 offseason to buy them out

Fiala would have been gone a year earlier for a lesser return and the Seattle expansion draft was coming up at the time

Oh I know, I know there was no good option there but what they should've done was a 2-3 year retool starting in the 2021 offseason, and ending in the 2024 offseason, and then it would've been time for them to compete again.

That’s essentially what’s happening anyways. They have basically all their picks, a top ranked prospect pool, young players graduating to the team and playoffs are still within reach after major injuries and a horrendous start

A retool/rebuild (ownership isn’t interested in the latter) changes nothing when it comes to the teams long term outlook and cap situation. Guerin has built a consistent playoff team with an emphasis on having a great culture in the room. That’s harder to do when you’re swapping pieces out for younger inexperienced players

TLDR:
- ownership has no interest in a rebuild
- a retool only lowers the team’s average age and likely doesn’t build the culture management wants, nor does it change how successful the team has been the past few years
- swapping out older players for younger players isn’t as important when you have a top ranked prospect pool that will be graduating multiple pieces in the same timeframe that you would I’ve envisioned

Basically, retool or rebuild while ideal, wasn’t fully on the table nor was is necessary to build a team with a strong longterm outlook
