Both sides decline.

The Devils aren't retaining 8 years of salary and Barzal would be their third best center (whereas Meier is their 1st or 2nd best winger)

The Isles have awful center depth even with Barzal, and objectively terrible center depth without him.

The Isles have great center depth tears of joy Horvat, Barzal (who is now playing on Horvat's wing but was obviously a center for his entire career prior to the trade), Nelson, Pageau, Cizikas

Forgot about Nelson. Still doesn't make this trade a good idea
