Edmonton needs a cup this year or next. This two year window is the calm before the storm. Leon Draisaitl is the league bargain of all bargains, $8.5 million a season for the next two years. With his next contract potentially in the neighborhood of $12-$12.5 million a season. Is anything off the table in Edmonton to make sure this team wins it all this year or next?

The cap is going up by an estimated $4.5M next year and could be over $90M by the time Leon's next contract kicks in. With most of the core players locked up well beyond that, there's no additional urgency to win during Leon's current contract.

FYI Draisaitl's current deal was 11.33% of the cap when it was signed. A potential $12M deal would be 13.33% of a $90M cap, so not debilitating in the least. Especially if McDavid takes a discount again.
