Hartman is a middle-six capable center and forward with a market value of $5M on a steal of a $1.7M contract.

Novak is a 4th line grinder being paid his worth, league minimum.

Guerin rightly would tell Trotz to take a flying leap and hang up.

Even IF Guerin was to consider this trade, which he won't, in what universe does Minnesota ADD to this trade? Hartman is easily the better player, is on a better contract, and is most assuredly NOT a cap dump.

You may disagree with the trade but this is nowhere near true, you may try again though.

Two 1sts? I think the most you can get for a guy a year removed from his one good season is a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th & Cal Foote.

So of the two UFAs on the last year of their deal, the older one coming off the worse season, who makes $900K more is the one on the better contract?

After looking it up, Novak scored 2 more goals and 4 more assists for a whopping SIX more points. My apologies to all the Novak enthusiasts out there.

Apparently I was wrong. Novak is Hartman 2.0. Shame on me...

Here's the rub.

The answer to your question is, yes, absolutely. Hartman is the better contract.

Why you may ask.

Simple.

Novak is a defensive black hole who's only deployed in offensive zone starts and plays against lesser competition than Hartman does. Oh and refuses to play to contact. Meanwhile Hartman plays a 200ft game, is much more physical, gritty, plays with an edge, and still has better GSVA and higher surplus value than Novak does.

Novak's market value, $5M, which is based on a GSVA of 1.5, gives him a surplus value of $4.2M.

Hartman's market value is $6.7M, based on a 2.1 GSVA and a $5M surplus value.

Ergo, Hartman is STILL the better contract.

Six more points in eight fewer games, with less ice time - if we're going to be pedantic. I'd put my money on the younger guy who's surging, over the older player coming off a down season. But you do you.

Hartman always seemed like a good guy, so I'm happy for him that he finally found some success in MIN. Why do some players like Hartman and Dubnyk suddenly do well there, after bombing out with multiple other teams?

That said, I don't want to see him wearing gold again. The Wild can keep him.

Not going to get into Dom's wacky charts. They're aesthetically pleasing, but I have about as much love for his projections as I do CHI winning the draft lottery.

Would think about a 1 for 1 but definitely not adding. Hartman has a much better track record. Novak does not but is younger. But 25 aint a spring chicken.
