I’m a Pens fan and I’m not even sure I’d love this deal but I think it’s pretty close. The Winnipeg trade just seems to fit well even if it’s a rental.

Agree with you on fair value in the PIT trade. No sure COL should be trading one of their LD without getting a 2C back. The Scheifele trade is bad value for COL. If I were them, I'd just keep Newhook and try him at 2C before making that trade.

Interesting, i would think the Avs would try to move Girard instead of Toews though. I know Toews needs a new contract but the cap's about to jump

I personally don’t see Newhook becoming the kind of player Scheifele is. The polarizing opinions on him here to me are silly. The guy is such an offensive force that you don’t pass on a chance to add him if you need a C.

They probably will but he’s harder to move. I think Toews will get about 7 million or more a year once he’s a UFA.

I doubt he would develop into a capable 1C ever. But he's eight years younger and $4m+ cheaper. If he can develop into a capable 2C for a long time at a cost effective cap hit that's a win for COL. And if COL is targeting someone from WPG to be their 2C, it should be Dubois. They can extend him and his age matches the COL core much better than Scheifele.

If he does colorado keeps him, but you have to think he's a top dman in the league and at this point they're getting 9+ million.. he's better then Jones and nurse... even severson is making 6+

Jones and Nurse got way overpaid, especially Nurse. I don’t think that’s going to happen even with a higher cap. I can see him getting 8 million max. How would you guys pay that? Whoever your 2C is (even if it’s Newhook) is going to cost you 4 million or so for a few years. Also you’ll be losing the 7 million in space you have now when Landeskog is back.

If I were COL, I'd trade Toews to target a 2C. Keep Byram and Girard as the LD. That keeps the team young and cost effective for the future.

Sure but that creates the issue of having to replace your 1LD, which we assume will be Byram eventually but he hasn't once had a healthy season so it's hard to trade toews at this point

It's a risk. I can just tell you if given the choice between a long contention window and a short peak, I'm taking the long contention window every single time. If Sakic is smart, that's what he'll do too. COL has a young core and could be contenders for years still.

You're in the neighborhood of 2M short on Byram for a 3 year deal. So I don't see how either move works. I would prefer to keep Newhook if we are getting a rental. MacK and Newhook are both good offensively, so Schiefele is a little redundant and the cost to acquire is too high. Someone like Backlund that could take the heavy defensive matchups and fit really well beside Val. And would rather get someone with term if we are moving Toews. If its rental for rental, a top 15 D is more valuable to the Avs.

Byram won't do a three year deal for less than $6M AAV. He wants 1st pair money.
